DOUGALL: IT is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Joseph James Dougall on April 28, 2014 at the age of 93. Dad was born at home in the Winchester Municipality on June 30, 1920 to Harry and Edith (Pinder). He was the second oldest of seven children. On May 20, 1941 Dad enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and served in England, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He was discharged from service on January 17, 1946 and he returned to the Mountainside Area. His years in the service brought him much pride and satisfaction, throughout his life he was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion and proudly received his 60 year service pin in 2012. On May 7, 1947 he married Cora Ruth Daw and from this union they had four children: Allan (Barb), Kenneth (Verna), Lynn, and Terry (Diane). Joe and Ruth farmed in the Mountainside area until they moved to Boissevain in 1966. Dad was a jack of all trades; mechanic, carpenter, electrician, truck driver, and master gardener are just a few of the hats he wore. He enjoyed working with his hands and took on many projects to keep busy. Joe was an excellent cribbage player and an avid card player. He always kept the cards on the table and the cribbage board handy just in case someone dropped in. Playing cards were always a welcome Christmas gift as he wore out many decks playing solitaire. Dad loved to drive and travel and he attributed this to his “army days.” His travels took him many different places in the United States, Canada, and Europe to visit family and his army buddies. He would never turn down an opportunity to see the country side and ventured on many day trips well into his 80’s. In 2003 Joe and Ruth retired to Brandon. It didn’t take him long to re-establish his walking routine, he traded the streets of Boissevain for the halls of the Brandon Shoppers Mall. He spent many hours “putting miles on” and delivering News in a Minute to his girls. On June 5, 2012 Dad moved into Fairview Personal Care Home. He continued to enjoy visits with his family and the new friends he made. He always looked forward to his outings with Dan, Doug, and Gwen. Joe was predeceased by his wife Ruth in 2005, as well as all of his siblings; Sadie, Eugene, Charlie, Gilbert, Edith, and Marjorie. He leaves to mourn his passing three sons, a daughter, 8 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten.Wheatland Funeral Service204-523-7791 www.wheatlandfs.com
