SEAR: Arthur Harry Sear October 6, 1931- June 16, 2014. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of a great father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend on Monday, June 16, 2014 at the age of 82. Art leaves to celebrate his life, his loving companion and best friend Muriel and her children, Shelley (Mark) of Carberry, MB and Randy (Kathi) of Saskatoon, SK. He also leaves his son Hal (Treasure) of Winnipeg, MB, daughter Valerie (Cory) of Portage la Prairie, MB and daughter Cathy of Red Deer, AB; grandchildren Amanda (Jonah), Candy (Ryan), Jason (Kim), Ellery (Jenna), David (Kandice), Trevor, Kevin, Brendan, Alyssa, Joshua and Brittany; and great-grandchildren Cash, Aja, Adia, Peyton, London, Lia and Piper. Art was predeceased by his parents Charles and Marvyl (Lundy) Sear, his brother Fred, his twin brother Lorne, and his wife Barbara (Campbell). Except for a couple of brief intervals, Art spent almost his entire life in Carberry. After completing his education in the Carberry schools, he joined his father and brother Lorne in the implement, bulk oil, and later hardware business. Lorne and Art took over the oil agency in 1961 and purchased the store shortly before their father passed away in 1965. The hardware store was sold in 1978, and the oil business in 1983. He also tried his hand in the fast food industry, running the Summer Shack for a few years in the 80s. Art then started his own Income Tax and Investment business which thrived until 1992 when he received an offer he couldnt refuse and retired. Through all of the above, Art enjoyed a strong love for sports and participated in all that were available. He always said that he would have gladly traded everything for the opportunity to become a pro hockey player, but he never got the chance. He played on and sponsored two slo-pitch teams the Shell Canadians, and Sears Investments. He ran in the Terry Fox Run for 20 consecutive years. When he wasnt playing sports, he was watching them on tv. He involved himself in community affairs, putting in considerable time with various sport groups, the development of the Carberry Recreation Ball Park and the financing and construction of the Carberry Plains Community Centre. Throughout his life he spent countless hours in Sprucewoods Provincial Park hiking, fishing, bird watching, looking for arrowheads, and discovering crocuses in the spring. He loved to ski and even when his health began to fail in his 70s, he still managed to ski over 500 kms in a winter. When walking became difficult he changed to biking all year round. Art served nineteen years on the volunteer fire brigade and twelve years on Carberry Town Council, the last nine from 1983-1992 as mayor. In 2001 he was awarded Citizen of the year and in 2012 he received the Builder Award for outstanding service to Carberry Minor Hockey. Art was a kind man who always had a smile to offer. He loved a good joke and he loved to tease. He took pride in his community and was always willing to help a friend in need. He was known to frequent the coffee shops and rarely passed a Tim Hortons. He loved ice cream, cookies, chocolate and a good steak. The funeral took place at the Knox-Zion Presbyterian Church on Thursday, June 19, 2014, with Whites Funeral Home in care of the arrangements. He was laid to rest in the Carberry Plains Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to a charity of their choice.
