METCALF: Jessie Ellen Metcalf, Brandon, widow of WM Mac Metcalf, died June 30, 2014 at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon after a brief illness. Jessie was born August 1, 1920 to Jack and Sadie Hay, the youngest girl in a family of 8. Raised on the family farm at Findlay, MB; she attended elementary at Maple Lake School, completed grades 9 & 10 by correspondence and high school at Brandon Collegiate. She graduated from Brandon Normal School in 1941. During the war she taught at rural schools in the Hillsdale, Pacific and Belcourt Districts as well as Winnipeg. Jessie met Mac while teaching at Pacific School and they were married September 1946 at Virden. Jessie continued to teach school after she was married and taught in Carol, Pearson, Cypress River and Moosomin. Jessie had three sons Terry, Doug and Brad. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Friends and her students were very important to her and she valued and cherished them all. Mac worked for the CPR and over the years they called Bienfait, Virden, Wheatland, Maryfield, Souris, Tilston, Cypress River and Moosomin home; retiring to Brandon in 1984. Jessie was a member of Knox United Church, Rebekahs, the Legion Auxiliary, numerous golf and curling clubs, Saskatchewan Teachers Federation and the Manitoba Teachers Society. She is survived by her sons Terry (Jeanette) and Brad (Wendy). daughter-in-law Pat Hay (Patrick Bud ), grandsons Darin (Shelley) , Marlin ( Jacquie), Greg, Cameron (Saejin Park), Cory (Juliana), Michael and Matthew Metcalf and Douglas (Tracey) Deren, Kris (Tami) Deren and granddaughter Chandel; great-grandchildren Carli, Justin, Mason, Rylan, Cole, Jett, Kieran, Sadie and Jude; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband Mac, son Douglas, great-grandson Brendan, parents Jack and Sadie Hay as well as her siblings, sisters Mary Chalmers, Georgie Atchison, Sadie James and brothers John, Frank, Douglas and Jim Hay. The Urn bearer at the family internment will be her grandson Darin and honourary pallbearers are all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A service in Celebration of her life will be held at Knox United Church, Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Jessie to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation for Cancer Services, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B3 or to a charity of your choice.
