MILLARD: The family of Doreen Millard sadly announces her passing, July 22, 2014. Doreen Gertrude Millard, nee Gill was born Feb 11, 1931 at her parent’s farm, the daughter of Arthur and Bessie Gill in the Pettapiece district near Rivers. She attended school in Medina. Doreen belonged to a family of seven children, Ruth, Doug, Shirley, Murray, Marjorie and Stan. When Doreen was eleven years old her mother passed away from a blood clot. Doreen and sister Shirley took over household duties at the age of 10 and 11. Thanks to wonderful neighbors the Shorts, Doreen and Shirley learned how to can fruits and vegetables. They had no hydro or freezer so the only way to preserve food was to can it. After grade ten her Dad asked her to quit school and look after the home front. Two years later Doreen went to work at the bank in Rivers. Upon completion of business college, Doreen was employed by T Eaton’s company where she was secretary to the manager. She spent four years at Eaton’s before she married Russell Millard of Waskada. They were married on June 20, 1953. Doreen leaves to mourn three children Barb, (Dennis), Blaine, (Yvonne) and Bill (Jodie) and her grandchildren Margo, Bruce (Kayla), Myles (Rachael), Todd (Sally), Kaitlin (Dan), Kyla (Adam), Kellie (Chad), and Maisie Rose (Mackenzie). Great-grandchildren are Emerson, Cora, Maggie and Levi. She was predeceased by her soul mate Russell, daughter Bonnie, grandson Billie, daughter-in-law Debbie. Doreen was unable to be alone at her home in Brandon as dementia took a toll on her. She moved into Fairview home and onto Killarney Bayside personal care home where she resided for the rest of her years. A graveside service was held in Waskada Cemetery on August 7 at 3:30 pm. Reception in Goodlands. Donations can be made to the Waskada Cemetery or the Alzheimer Society. Smith’s Funeral Home, 204-747-2088. www.wheatlandfs.com
