STORIE: Iris passed away peacefully on August 28th at Hillcrest Place. She was born in Cypress River, Manitoba on March 7, 1924, the third daughter of Will Jay and Edna Young (Johnson). She grew up in the Greenway area, with two sisters, Joyce and Opal, and two brothers, Lexley and Keith. She always cherished her childhood memories. She attended Greenway School and Baldur High School. At eighteen she went into the (Old) Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg and graduated as a nurse in 1945. During her training she formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. Her classmates held regular reunions and communicated by round-robin letter over a period of five decades. In May of 1946 she married Cliff Storie, they lived in Winnipeg for ten years, before moving with their young family to a farm near Baldur. With most of the children in school she resumed her nursing career. She eventually became the Director of Nursing at Baldur Hospital, but it was her many years working directly with patients that she looked back upon with pride. She often mentioned that she had assisted with the birth of over 100 babies. Countless former patients remember her for her caring, her skill, and her innate ability to make their hospital stay as pleasant as possible. Cliff and Iris moved to Brandon in 1992 where together they spent many happy “retirement years”. They were both members of the Order of the Eastern Star, and thoroughly enjoyed the extensive travel, and the fellowship among the sisters and brothers. Cliff passed away in March of 2001 and before long Iris found a new home at Hobb’s Manor, where she enjoyed many new friendships, the strong sense of community, and the activities provided. She developed a renewed interest in music, and could often be found at the piano with a few neighbours who had gathered to enjoy the old standards she knew by heart. Iris was a life-long member of the United Church and joined Knox United Church where she was an active member in activities ranging from Choir to Quilting. Her retirement years also gave her time for her many hobbies and crafts. She was very creative with needlework and sewing, and could put together anything from a horse harness to a silk wedding dress – on short notice and with the materials at hand! Iris always cared deeply about her family and took great pride in their achievements. She leaves behind her children: Ken (Bev) and sons Jonah and Geoff; Jerry and children Lindsay and Ben; Donna (Dave August) and children Pamela and Paul; Grant (Carol) and children Dale and Tara; Tim (Debbie) and children Nicole, Angela and Natasha; her grandchildren’s spouses and partners; 15 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Betty Young and Marie Young, and many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her parents, her siblings, and her daughter-in-law Betty. A “Come and Go Tea” in celebration of Iris’s life will be held at Hobb’s Manor from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. on Friday, September 12th.We love you Mom and Grandma, and we’ll miss you in so many ways. Consider yourself hugged!
