HAMMOND: March 24, 1936 - September 25, 2014. Jack Samuel was born on the family farm 24-4-19 Morton Municipality to Leslie (Chub) and Jessie (Bartley) Hammond. He attended Hiawatha School 3 1/2 miles from the farm. After completing school he worked road construction for Morton Municipality and then for Ed Coates Construction. They built many roads in southwest Manitoba. Jack had many stories to tell of these years. When his uncle Jim Hammond died, he farmed the original Hammond homestead and then continued to farm with his dad until 2001 when Jack suffered a minor stroke, and moved to Jubilee Manor in Boissevain. Jack enjoyed curling in his younger years, and later watching it on T.V. but his real pleasure was visiting with people and his great ability to tell stories. He could turn any daily event into a story. Everyone who knew Jack will remember. Jack lived an independent life until the very end. From 2001 to present, the family farm has been worked by long-time neighbours - Wayne and Shannon Robertson. Jack was predeceased by his parents Chub and Jessie Hammond (1983 and 1985.) Left to cherish his memory and stories are his three sisters Jean and Tom Hean, Lorna and Jim McLenehan, and Vonnie and Cam Coates, as well as three nieces Deb Temple, Pam Jason, Sue Dunn and three nephews, Les and Kevin McLenehan, Chad Coates, and their families. Jack was laid to rest beside his parents in Boissevain Cemetery September 30, 2014. Boissevain and area was truly Jack’s home. He will rest in peace.
