McGHIE: Jean Viola McGhie, age 84 years, passed away December 31, 2014 at her residence, Hillcrest Place in Brandon after a long battle with Alzheimers. Jean was born in Deloraine, Manitoba on August 22, 1930, to Bert and Lavada Cathcart. She attended school at Bayview and took her high school by correspondence. Later in life, Jean attended Brandon University. Jean and Harvey McGhie were married August 12, 1949 and lived in Shilo until 1968, when they moved to Brandon. Jean's love was her family. When there was a problem, she was there with support. She was very aware of the need for healthy living and exercised daily. Jean and Harvey travelled Canada and the United States with their fifth wheel. Curling, bowling and golf were activities that she loved. She also loved to sew and loved crossword puzzles. Jean leaves her loving husband Harvey; children Gerald (Veronica) of Romania, Wendy (Ken) Martens of Brandon and Ian of Brandon; grandchildren; Michele (Pat) Poirier, Miranda (Dustin) Hickman, Christopher (Christina) McGhie, Darcy (Charlene) McGhie and eight great grandchildren. Jean is survived by sister Marjorie Plant and sisters-in-law Irene Cathcart and Isabel Cathcart. She was predeceased by her parents Gilbert and Lavada Cathcart; son Brian; siblings Ruth (Ed) Schellenberg, Gilbert and Douglas and brother-in-law Ernie Plant. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Hillcrest Place for the loving care they gave to Jean during the six years that she resided there. A special thank-you to Dr. Mary Egan and all who expressed condolences. Jean's memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
