POWERS: Joan Elsie Powers passed away at the Wawanesa Personal Care Home on Friday March 13, 2015 at the age of 95 years, with her family at her side. Joan was born to Alan & Marjorie Avery in Austin Mb on January 26, 1920. She moved with her parents & sisters to Nesbitt MB where the family owned & operated the grocery store. It was in Nesbitt where she met Samuel Wilfred Powers. They married on June 12, 1941. Joan & Sam raised their children in Nesbitt & in 1952, took over the grocery store, naming it Powers Sur-Fine Groceteria. The business included a bus depot, gas station & post office. Upon retirement in 1984, Joan & Sam remained in Nesbitt, where Sam died in 1992. Joan eventually moved to Wawanesa Valley Lodge where she lived for many years before becoming a resident of the personal care home. Joan was an exceptional baker & her treats were enjoyed by many over the years. Her beautiful needle point adorns the walls in the homes of her children & grandchildren. Her other interests included knitting, letter writing & tending to the needs of her grandchildren, who she adored. Joan was a deeply caring and thoughtful lady. Joan was predeceased by her husband Sam, great granddaughter Kayla, her dear grandson Orey, her golden boy Alan & her sisters Kaye & Edith. She is survived by her children Sandi Gullett (Bruce), twins Karen Wright (Victor) & Kevin Powers; grandchildren Monica (Kevin), Derek (Suzy), Krista (Shane), Jodi (Craig) & Ryan; great grandchildren Barret, Kylie, Cade, Cannen, Hayden & Jaxon; pampered pooches Spike & Ginger. Joan’s family wish to extend their sincere gratitude to the exceptional caring team at the Wawanesa Health Centre who cared for Joan as if she were their mom, and to special friends Tannis Rathwell & Ina Cullen. A private family graveside service will be held at the Minnewawa Cemetery on Tuesday March 17, 2015, with Joan’s friend Shirley McBurney officiating.
