BATER:Mary (nee Smith) passed away peacefully with family by her bedside on March 30th at her residence, Fairview Home, at the age of 106 years. Mary was born on the family farm at Lenore, Manitoba on February 8, 1090. She was predeceased by her husbands, Clarence Pettigrew in 1952 and Llew Bater in 1996; parents, William and Elizabeth Smith; brothers, Harry, Wesley, Alfred, Sam; sisters, Edna Routledge and Viola Ellis. Mary is survived by sisters Wilda Higgins, Huntsville, Ontario and Margaret Quinn, Virden, her brother and sister in law Russell and Dorothy Smith, Virden and many nieces and nephews. Mary received her education at Errol School in the Lenore District. As a young girl Mary worked as a domestic helper for families around Lenore, Kenton, Hamiota and Brandon. Later she took a hair dressing course in Buffalo, New York and worked as a hair stylist in Fort Erie, Ontario and Brandon. Mary resided in Brandon since 1947 and moved to the Fairview in 2002. The funeral service was held on April 8th at Brockie Donovan Chapel with Rev. Lydia Glawson officiating. Marys nephew, Clarence Lockhart, shared moments to remember of Marys life. Interment was at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.
