PLANIDIN:1930-2015. On April 28th, 2015, Walter Planidin of Benito, MB, formerly of Brandon, MB passed away at the age of 84 years. On June 30th, 1930 Walter was born to Fred & Irene Planidin of the Thunderhill District in Saskatchewan. He was the third of four boys. He attended the Thunderhill School until he was diagnosed with Polio and needed to move to St. Catherine, Ont. where he underwent treatment. Upon completion the family returned to Saskatchewan and continued to be farmers on the Thunderhill. On July 3rd, 1965, Walter married the love of his life, Janice Eggie and they continued to farm on Thunderhill until the house burnt. They spent a brief time in Arran, and then Walter pursued a career in barbering, so he and Janice moved to Regina, SK were he could receive his certificate. A year after marriage, they started raising a family and were blessed with two healthy boys; Walter Jr. and Leonard. Leaving Regina, they returned to the Valley and settled in Benito were Walter had a business. At this time they expanded their family and had two more healthy boys; Daniel and Micheal. Again career paths would change and it found the family venturing to Dauphin where Janice would complete her nursing course. Upon completion, Walter took a full-time position working on the army base in Shilo and Janice travelling to Brandon. Living in Shilo for three years, they decided to uproot and move to the City of Brandon. This is where they rounded out their family with their final son Kyle and, where they made their home for 38 years until returning to Benito. His family meant the world to him. Always welcoming and loving unconditionally. As much as he loved his family his second passion was music. In his early years he played with friends in the Benito District in a band called the Riverside Ramblers. They were local celebrities at many barn dances, and had recorded some records. At family gatherings Walter enjoyed entertaining guests singing old country songs and playing his guitar for everyone. Recently, Walter could be heard on Monday afternoons singing for the residents at the Benito Personal Care home – he hadn’t lost his touch. One of Walter’s fondest memories was when he had the privilege of meeting The Possum himself, George Jones and another classic, Kitty Wells. Walter is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Janice and 5 children; Walter Jr. (Mel) of Winnipeg, Leonard (Kathy) of Brandon, Daniel of Winnipeg, Micheal (Bonnie) of Brandon, & Kyle (Cassasndra) of Brandon.
