MANNS: Harold Josiah Manns, formerly of Carberry, MB, passed away on May 12, 2015 in Virden, MB at the age of 97. He was born on the family farm in the Firdale area on March 8, 1918, the 6th child of 11 born to Charles and May Manns. He married Matilda Sladek on June 28, 1941 in Austin and moved 2 miles north to the Sladek farm in the Pine Creek district where he continued his lifetime farming career, retiring to Carberry in 1980. In his early years on the farm, he kept bees, learning the trade from his father-in-law. He made several trips to Georgia to bring bees home in the spring. In later years, he was able to put his beekeeping knowledge to good use helping his daughter, Linda, with her family’s growing apiary. He was a Councillor for the R.M. of North Norfolk for many years and served on many boards including the Whitemud Watershed and the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame. His dedication to community continued after his retirement to Carberry where he was a volunteer ambulance driver well into his 70’s. He joined Gothic Masonic Lodge in 1965 and would have received his 50 year jewel this year. He was a member of Sharon Chapter of Eastern Star for many years until its closing and held the office of Worthy Patron 9 times. In retirement, he spent many hours at the Carberry Sandhills Golf Course, enjoying the friendship of T. Roy Bailey and Alex Hoff, which earned them the title “The Three Amigos” in an article published in the Carberry News Express. Family was very important to him and when grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, he always managed to have someone on his lap. He was predeceased by his wife, Matilda, on November 2, 2000, and by brothers and sisters, Albert, Jim, Florence Duncan, Eva Duncan, Tom, Clarence, Len, May Lunn and Garth, and son-in-law, Keith Addison. He is survived and will be missed by daughters, Kay Addison, Linda (Dennis) Lewis, Debbie (Tom) Jennings and Donna (Don) Johnston, Grandchildren, Mark (Kellie) Addison, Shaun (Sara) Addison, Susan (Joe) Wright, Kim (Kevin) Chutskoff, Michael Lewis, Greg (Regan) Lewis, Alana Jennings-Coutts (Michael Coutts), Cherie (Rob) Langston, and Donna Johnston (Jeff Ziemanski), 18 Great-Grandchildren, and by sister, Thelma Waterhouse.
