SCHMITZ: Velma Schmitz (nee Clark) May 16, 1929 to August 30, 2015. It is with sadness that we announce that our Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma died peacefully on August 30, 2015. We are grateful that she lived a full and happy life. Velma was born to Frank and Pearl Clark in Central Butte, Saskatchewan. Raised during the dirty thirties, Mom could live off a shoestring. She was raised in Central Butte, later re-locating to Wynyard, SK, Nipawin, SK, Revelstoke, BC and in 1972 moved to Brandon, MB and it became her permanent home. Besides raising eight children, Mom also worked at K-Mart and the Royal Oak Inn. She was active in square dancing, bowling and swimming until she had a stroke in 2007. She handled her stroke with her usual determination to make the best of her life. She moved to Rideau Personal Care Home and immediately started a new life with many new friends, participating in all the activities they offered in her new home. Mom was predeceased by her parents, her sister Verna Dean, the father of her children, Peter Schmitz, granddaughters Melissa Schmitz and Leanne Schmitz, great-granddaughter, Melania Schmitz, and several brother and sister-in-laws. She is survived by her brother Irwin Clark (Yvonne), and sister Irene Clark. Mom is also survived by her eight children, Diane Baker (George), Clint Schmitz, Carol Storie (Grant), Eldon Schmitz (Linda Lidster), Wayne Schmitz (Debbie), Kim Nielsen (Andy), Marla MacGregor (Mike) and Garnet Schmitz (Delilah), 14 grandchildren and their spouses, and 13 great grandchildren, brothers and sister-in-law, and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the wonderful and caring staff at Rideau Personal Care home for the exceptional care that Mom received, especially during the last days. Mom's funeral service will be held at the Trinity United Church, 1515 6th Street, Brandon, MB on Friday, September 4, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to MADD, Box 50058, Brandon, MB R7A 7E4 or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 824 18th Street #3, Brandon, MB R7A 5B7.
