McKAY: Austn C. McKay Sr. “Wakinyan Wambdi” (Thunder Eagle” and “Hobu Tokaha” (First Young Man) entered the spirit world peacefully on December 6, 2015, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Austin was born to Eric and Rachel McKay on May 9, 1948 on the Oak River Reservation and grew up in a traditional Dakota family and Tiospaye. He was affectionately known to his takoja’s (grandchildren) as “Papa”. Austn enjoyed spending time with his Takoja’s conversing in his Dakota language with his siblings and koda’s , hunting hockey, and was an exceptional fastball pitcher known throughout the Westman and Saskatchewan areas having pitched for Simplot, Keystone Glass and Park Auto Body in various tournaments throughout the mid 1970’s and 80’s. As a true Dakota Ikce Wicasa (common man), he lived his life traditionally by displaying compassion, respect and humbleness throughout. These proved true as he was given the distinction of honor of being appointed as Keeper of the Dakota/ Lakota/Nakota Nations pipe and by his constant participation in the sundance ceremony. Austin is predeceased by both his parents, Hunka brother: Gerald One Feather. Daughter: Ronalee. His younger siblings: Linda, Leon, Debra, and Willis and his Koda’s: Nelson Mazawasicuna and Chris Leith. He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara. Children: Austin Jr. Ardele, Leon, Steven (Connie) and Tyler (Tiffany). Hunka Brother: Francis (Chubbs) Thunderhawk. Brothers: Aaron (Sandra), Marshall (Melinda), Franklin (Jaci), Kenneth (Carrie) and Edward (Rose). Sisters: Shirley (Howard), Lena (Glen), and Heather. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces and his beloved grandchildren. Service will be held at Brockie Donovan on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. A Traditional Wake will be held at The Sioux Valley Veterans Hall at 5:00 p.m. Interment will follow on December 11, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at The Sioux Valley Catholic Cemetery. A very special thank you to the staff at The Renal Health Unit at the Brandon Assiniboine Centre.
