McLEOD: Surrounded by family, Dona J. H. McLeod passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Thursday, December 31, 2015. She was born on April 3, 1927, to parents James and Eva Howell of Roland, Manitoba. The family moved to Baldur in 1936, where she finished her schooling. Dona then taught on a permit for a year, before taking her teacher training at Normal School. While teaching at Aberdeen School she met Jack McLeod and they were married on October 14, 1950. This year they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. They lived with Jack's mother and stepfather for three years. In 1951, Neil was born. They moved to Jack's grandfather's homestead in 1953. Three more children were born while living at Mather; Bev, Shelly and Don. At Mather, Dona was kept busy with farming, milking cows, planting apple trees, growing a garden, teaching Sunday School, belonging to UCW, preparing food and caring for the children. In her spare time she caught for a Ladies Softball Team and curled in the winter. In 1966, the family moved to Brandon. Dona went back to teaching in the fall of 1968 at ACC in the Adult Basic Training Department, retiring in June 1990. In 1986, Jack and Dona moved to a farm in the Brandon Hills and remained there until November 2004. She was a 25 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Dona's love of the outdoors always showed as she watched and fed the birds and tended her yard and flowers. Once retired, she enjoyed curling, bowling and golfing. In 2004, Dona and Jack moved back into Brandon. Predeceased by her parents Jim and Eva Howell; brother and sister- in-law Delorie and Betty Howell; mother-in-law and step-father Maggie and Ed Croskery; brother and sister-in-law Bruce and Evelyn McLeod, and brother-in-law Fraser McLeod and nephew Keith McLeod.
