MILLER: Robert John Miller. March 16, 1943 - December 30, 2015. Robert (Bob) Miller, aged 72, passed away peacefully at Pembina Manitou Health Centre on December 30, 2015, succumbing to cancer. He leaves to mourn many friends, relatives and former students. Bob was predeceased by his parents Cecil and Florence (McArter) Miller. Bob was born in Deloraine, Manitoba and grew up on the farm near Medora. He attended Sherwood School and when it closed, attended Medora. He went to Deloraine for high school. Bob then went off to Brandon University to become a teacher. His first and most loved school was Nellie McClung High School. Many of those students are still his friends. He left Manitou in 1974 and taught at Flin Flon, Riverton, and Macgregor after that. In the early 80’s Bob decided teaching was no longer for him and he moved to Winnipeg. He worked casually in various places in Winnipeg. He lived with and helped his Aunt Edna McArter until her passing. He then moved to Brandon. His parents lived in Brandon and were in their senior years. He was close by to be of assistance and also to help his Aunt Nora Onslow and cousin who also lived in Brandon. Eventually his father passed away, his mother moved to a care home and passed away, and his aunt also passed away. In 2003 he moved back to his beloved Manitou. As one of his friends so aptly put it, Manitou adopted him as one of their own. He felt so at home and loved by the people of Manitou. His yard and little house gave him pleasure and so did the freedom he now enjoyed. Bob believed in community and he excelled at volunteering! Following are a few of the groups that benefitted from Bob's volunteerism. There was the choir at the United Church, working for the church setting up for funerals, counting out soup labels and participating in events there. At floor curling he sai he even washed the floor on his knees. He also volunteered at the log house including through the Amazing Race events, at the Honey Garlic and Maple Syrup Festival where he floured the chicken and manned the drink booth. He was the Passion Play greeter and also on a committee at the Pembina Manitou Care Center. He loved every minute of this, even though he grumbled a bit. Coffee, at the various spots around Manitou or in Brandon, when he visited his cousin monthly, was always an enjoyable time. Bob loved people and loved nothing better than listening to their life stories and interjecting encouragement where he could. Bob touched many lives in his unassuming way and we shall miss him deeply. The funeral service will be held Friday January 8, 2016 at 2:00 pm at St. Andrews United Church in Manitou. Reception to follow at the church. Interment of the ashes will be held at the Medora Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pembina Manitou Health Center Palliative Care or St. Andrews United Church Memorial Fund. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you. Psalm 42: 6Messages of condolence may be made online at www.wheatlandfs.com.Wheatland Funeral Service(204) 825-2848 www.wheatlandfs.com
