SHADLOCK: Nick Shadlock, formerly of Douglas, aged 97 years, passed away peacefully at his residence Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home on Wednesday, January 20, 2016. A beloved Dad to his three sons and Gigi to his four grandchildren, he was a wonderful father-in-law to his two daughters-in-law, and Uncle Nicky to his many nieces and nephews. Dad was born on November 13, 1918, to Pearl and Michael Shadlock in Brandon, Manitoba. He was one of 13 children. He went to David Livingstone School until grade 8. He worked at various jobs in the last years of "The Great Depression." In 1941, he enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces to fight in World War II. He was assigned to the Royal Winnipeg Rifles Infantry Division, and sent to Great Britain for training in 1942. In 1944, he was with the first wave of Canadian troops that landed at Juno Beach and fought in Europe until the end of the War. He took his discharge from the army in 1946, and moved back to Brandon. Shortly after, he met Elizabeth "Betty" McMurdo from Lyleton, Manitoba. They dated, got engaged, and were married on November 26, 1949. Mom had been a nurses aide at the Brandon Mental Hospital. Together Mom and Dad had three sons: Derek, Kevin, and Darcy. In the mid 1950's, they moved to the Douglas area, where they raised their family and started farming. Mom joined the Douglas W.I. and the local church group. Dad volunteered at the rink, and in 1959, was asked to form and coach a boys baseball team for Douglas. He coached baseball for Douglas until the early 1970's. In 1963, he became employed at CFB Shilo, first at the steam plant and later at the civil engineering department. He retired from the workforce in 1983. Dad loved his sports, not only playing and coaching baseball, but also, hockey and golf. He played on the Shilo old timers hockey team until he was 65. In his mid 50's, he took up golf. He golfed into his 80's, holding memberships at Shilo Golf Club and later at Glen Lea. When health issues forced him to quit playing, he continued to watch, especially Hockey Night In Canada, and Blue Jays Baseball. Dad was predeceased by Mom in 2006 after 57 years of marriage. He was also predeceased by his father, mother and all his siblings. He is survived by his son Derek and wife Sherry of London, Ontario, grandchildren Jessica (Andre) and Andrew of Toronto, Ontario. Son Kevin, grandchildren Melanie (Mark), and Tabitha of Edmonton, Alberta. Son Darcy and his wife Donna of Brandon, Manitoba. Plus many nieces and nephews. The ceremony to celebrate Dad's life was held at Memories Chapel on January 29, 2016. Lydia Glawson, Funeral Celebrant, officiated. Son Darcy read the Eulogy and Son Kevin was Urn Bearer. The Royal Canadian Legion provided Honour Guards. Several of Dad's favourite songs were played at the ceremony, including a short video of him singing at his 97th birthday. Interment of both Mom and Dad was held in the Veterans' Section of the Brandon Cemetery. Special thanks to the staff at the Hillcrest Personal Care Home. Your care, compassion, and friendship were very appreciated by Dad and the family. Donations may be made in memory of Dad to the charity of your choice.
