TAYLOR: Reta Marjorie Taylor (McDougall). 1923 – 2016. On Friday morning March 25th the long and fulfilled life of Reta Marjorie Taylor came to an end at the Evergreen Place Personal Care Home in Boissevain, Manitoba. Born June 5th, 1923 on the family farm (Section 4-5-18) near Margaret in the municipality of Riverside, Marjorie was the middle child of three daughters born to William Spurgeon ‘Spud’ McDougall and Ada Armstrong. As a girl Marjorie attended Harmony, Buttrum and Margaret schools. After completing Grade 12 by correspondence, she went to Normal School and received her Teacher’s Certificate. Marj really enjoyed teaching and took great pride in her students’ accomplishments. On July 23rd, 1947 she married James Albert Taylor, her biggest supporter, soul mate, farm partner and devoted husband of 53 years. They made their home on the farm on Section 18-4-18, north of Ninga. For a number of years she boarded school teachers. In addition to working hard on the farm, Marj was a strong supporter of the community. She served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Hiawatha School District, as a volunteer 4-H Leader and a member of both the United and Presbyterian Women’s Church groups in Ninga. In 1967 she was asked to sit on the Riverside Centennial Committee that designed the roadside park that is situated on Highway 23 near Dunrea, MB. Marj and Jim retired to Boissevain in 1977. She became a member of the St. Paul’s United Church and was active in the women’s church group, the Turtle Mountain Agricultural Society as a volunteer worker and an exhibitor, and the Boissevain Drop-In Centre. Mom had many interests and pursued them all to the best of her ability. She loved to quilt. Each grandchild has a beautifully hand stitched memory of their grandmother’s love. She enjoyed playing bridge. She painted and varnished Jim’s woodworking projects. She was an avid reader and gardener. Mom prepared excellent meals and she loved to bake. Grandma always showed up with baking in hand to the delight of her grandchildren, usually on trays and wrapped in wax paper. Dad passed away in 2000 and she continued on with grace and dignity and lovingly supporting her family. The last three years she spent in the Evergreen Place Personal Care Home where she received excellent care and compassion. Mourning her loss are her daughters Marilyn Robertson and Mavis (Bruce) McPhail; her six grandchildren; Curtis (Andrea) Robertson, Colleen (Neal) Gregory, Cindy (Lee) Moncur, Cory, Jamie, and David McPhail; and her eight grandchildren Natalie and Tyler Robertson, Charlie, Graeme and Noah Gregory and Devyn, Camden and Cason Moncur; her sister Eileen McCleary and sister-in-law Thelma Taylor. Marj was predeceased by her husband Jim Taylor; her sister Mary Cowan; son-in-law Laverne Robertson and her brother-in-laws Doc McCleary and Bill Cowan. A memorial service was held on Thursday, March 31st at St. Paul’s United Church with Reverend Doug Craig officiating. A private family internment took place at the Boissevain Cemetery. Should friends so desire, donations in Marjorie’s memory may be made to the Boissevain and Morton Foundation or Evergreen Place Personal Care Home.
