SMITH: At the age of 94 years, Richard "Dick" Smith passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Fairview Home in Brandon. Dick was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Peggy in 2014. His memory will be cherished by son Bill (Lynn); daughter Kathleen Helen; son Richard (Alvina); son David (Shelley); grandchildren Kaleigh, Paula, Nathan, Brennagh, Michaela, Kieran; great grandchildren Kate, Nicholas and Eloise as well as numerous nieces and nephews who knew him as “Uncle Dick”.He was born September 15, 1921 on the family farm in the Burdette District near Birtle, Manitoba to William and Eliza Smith. Dick attended Burdette School and as a young man he worked the family farm with his father. On December 5, 1945 he married Margaret "Peggy" Josephine Woods. In 1952, they moved to Birtle. Dick continued to help out on the farm and over the years he owned the Birtle Transfer, Birtle Taxi and Birtle Garage and later worked at CO-OP Implements. He was also a member of the Birtle Volunteer Fire Department. In 1965, the family moved to Neepawa. Dick worked as a parts manager at CO-OP Implements, Lee Farm Equipment, Murray’s Garage and Green Acres Farm Equipment. They moved to Brandon, in 1980, where Dick enjoyed semi-retirement as the caretaker of Boreham Park Apartments. Dick and Peggy were active members of the local Seniors for Seniors organization and loved bowling and golfing. Dick became a fixture at Sunnyside Golf Club. Having a lifelong love of anything motorized, Dad always seemed to be driving a new car. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Fairview Home for their care and kindness to both Mom and Dad. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
