COCHRANE: With family by his side, Lloyd Merle Cochrane, formerly of Victoria Landing, passed away Monday, April 25, 2016 at the Assiniboine Centre, Brandon, MB. Lloyd was born April 23, 1920 on a farm four miles south of Elgin. Due to circumstances in the early thirties, he left school after completing Grade Eight and went to work to help support his family. He worked on several farms in the area before he was fortunate enough to secure a job on Rupert Barber's farm in the Underhill area. Lloyd was the same age as the Barber's only daughter Vivian. They had many common interests. Dancing was one of their favourite past times. Mr. Barber was kind enough to lend them his car so they could attend most of the dances in the area. Lloyd and Vivian were married September 21, 1940 at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 401-1st Street, Brandon, Manitoba. They lived with the Barbers until 1943, when Lloyd purchased the Ballantyne farm at Fairfax, Manitoba. Lloyd was a very successful farmer in the Fairfax area. He attended many short courses at the Ag School in Brandon. Vivian was his right hand man, and because in the early years there was only Vivian and the three girls, they all worked side by side to get the work done. We all have our special memories of those times. Lloyd was a member of the Kilwinning Masonic Lodge in Minto, Manitoba for many years. At a lodge meeting in Minto one evening in the 1950's, Lloyd, his father John who belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Elgin, his brothers Art and Ken who also belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Elgin, and his brother Ossie, who belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Cranbrook, B.C. all attended the same meeting in Minto. This was the first time that five Masonic Lodge Members of the same family had attended the same meeting. Lloyd was proud that he was able to retire at the age of 53. In 1970, he sold the farm and purchased a home on Richmond Avenue in Brandon. After a few years there, Lloyd and Vivian moved to Hemlock Crescent where they enjoyed retirement. Many happy times were spent with family and friends at that home on Hemlock Crescent. Lloyd and Vivian loved to square dance and travel. After retirement he and Vivian square danced for 37 years. Square dancing took them to all the Canadian provinces and many of the states in the U.S.A. Lloyd and Vivian spent 23 winters in Texas, enjoyed a trip to England, as well as a cruise to Alaska. Many long lasting friends were made during those years. In 2000, Lloyd and Vivian sold their home and moved to Lions Manor. After the loss of his loving wife, Vivian of 65 years, Lloyd moved to Victoria Landing Retirement Residence in 2007. He enjoyed his time there and made many friends. During the last few years his hearing started to fail, but his mind was incredible. We all knew who to call if we needed information about a family member, friend, or event. Lloyd was able to communicate better on the phone than in person, and looked forward every day for a call from his son and three daughters. Lloyd spent many hours watching TV. He had special shows he liked to watch, including curling, baseball, and hockey. After each sporting event, he waited for a call from Jack so that they could talk about the game. Lloyd was admitted to Brandon Regional Health Centre April 2, 2016. On April 12 Lloyd's brother Ossie arrived from Vernon, B.C. to attend a pre-arranged 80th Birthday celebration for Ossie, and a 96th Birthday celebration for Lloyd. Lloyd was not able to attend that celebration, but was able to reconnect, and enjoy time with his brother he had not seen for many years. On April 23 Lloyd celebrated his 96th birthday in his room with birthday cake, balloons, and family. He enjoyed that day. The morning of April 25, after a long and happy life, and with family by his side, Lloyd quietly slipped away. Left with memories of a positive, kind, hardworking, honest, happy man with a great sense of humor are daughters Fairlie (Keith Parker), Darlene (Glen Rose), Delma (Richard Schraeder), son Jack, six grandchildren and their spouses, thirteen great grandchildren and their spouses, and six great great grandchildren. Also left to remember Lloyd are brother Ossie (Jeanette), sister Donalda Neufeld, sister-in-law Vona Cochrane, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their spouses.
