MAYES: Mr. Harold Mayes passed away at Dinsdale Personal Care Home in Brandon on Monday, June 27, 2016 at the age of 94. Harold was born on September 23, 1921 on the Mayes Homestead in Lyleton. He farmed the land with his father until he joined the Royal Canadian Airforce in 1941. He trained as an airframe mechanic over the years of 1941-42 and eventually trained as an air gunner in 1944. He never saw active service before his discharge in 1945. In Harold’s later years he enjoyed going to the air force museum in Brandon. Once discharged, Harold returned to Lyleton and bought S 17-2-28 from his uncle Bob in 1947. Harold met Loretta Darling at the Manitoba Federation of Agriculture Association in July of 1950. At that time Harold was working in Winnipeg and Loretta was attending normal school thus making it easy for them to see a lot of each other. Harold and Loretta were married in July 1952. Harold continued to work the farm with his son Wes until he retired in 1982. Harold and Loretta retired to Melita and Harold remained in there until 2014. Harold was always active in the community. He was a member of the Pool Elevator, Lyleton and Melita Curling Clubs, Melita Royal Canadian Legion and a volunteer ambulance driver when they moved to Melita. Harold loved playing cards. He always participated in card events while living on the farm and after moving to Melita he played at the pool hall and then at the Melita Legion. During Harold’s retirement, Harold and Loretta started travelling. They visited Churchill, the Maritimes, NWT, BC, ON and spent parts of the winter in Arizona. He was predeceased by his loving wife Loretta in 2006; two brothers: Clarence and Elwyn. Harold is survived by his three children: Wes Mayes, Kim (Doug) Bayes and Cheryl (Mark Barnes) Meyer; three grandchildren: Corey Bayes, Tessa Meyer and Maranda Meyer; two siblings: Louella (Hugh) Tamblyn and Ronnie (Diane) Mayes; numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held at the Pierson Cemetery, Pierson, MB on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with (rev.) Heather Sandilands officiating. Lunch and visiting followed at the Lyleton Community Hall, Lyleton, MB.
