CALVERT: Melvin Argyle Stewart Calvert, March 2, 1928 - July 9, 2016. Melvin Calvert passed away on July 9, 2016 at the age of 88 at the Assiniboine Hospital in Brandon. Mel is survived by his loving wife, Joan, his children Robert (Sharon), Cathy Setter (Greg), Leo (Alice). Grandchildren, Clinton Calvert, Tracy Sutherland (Chris), Curtis Calvert (Wendy), Deanne Shwaluk (Robert), Michelle Setter (Myles Shastko), Michael Calvert (Kelsey), Mark Calvert (Kendall Hanus), Matthew Calvert (Courtney), and ten great- grandchildren, and sister-in-law Edna Stewart. Mel was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Ellen Calvert, his two sons, Larry and Ross Calvert, his brothers Art, Ken and Percy Stewart and sisters Dorothy Stewart and Evelyn O’Brien. Melvin grew up in Melbourne district and took over the family farm when he finished school. He married Joan Wright of Sidney on July 14, 1951. Together they raised cattle and grew grain and potatoes. They retired from the farm in 1979 and moved to Brandon where Mel worked seasonally for some years for Mazer Implements. For many years they spent their winters in Palm Springs enjoying the warm weather. Mel was a loving family man and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed playing games with them and watching their sports. He took great joy in the visits with his great-grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening and fixing anything that needed repair. The funeral took place in Carberry United Church on July 14, 2016 with Gloria Mott officiating. The family would like to thank White’s Funeral Home, Gloria for her words of comfort and the UCW ladies for serving lunch. Many thanks go out to all our family and friends for cards, flowers and messages of sympathy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
