McDONALD: It is with sorrow in our hearts, we announce the passing of Hector John McDonald of Brandon. He passed away peacefully with family by his side on July 27, 2016 at the age of 89 years. Hector was born on June 18, 1927 in Shoal Lake, MB. His years of education were cut short to help work on the family farm for a few years until he joined the Army for a brief period of time. Hector traveled Canada throughout his life and worked in Ontario for several years in lumber camps, mines and ships on the Great Lakes. He told many stories of his years as a truck driver for over 30 years throughout Canada. He moved back to Manitoba in 1970 where a few years later, Hector began his life in Brandon with Ferle and her children. During their life together they ran a home day care looking after many children for over 20 years, forming meaningful bonds. Hector loved kids and dogs and attracted them like a magnet. He had a warm smile and great sense of humor and loved to joke around. Hector enjoyed family gatherings big or small, playing cards and board games. He was an avid reader and enjoyed watching his sports on TV (mostly baseball and hockey and in later years football, watching his grandson play). He is survived by his loving partner Ferle, daughter Trish (Malcolm), step-daughters Gail (Garth), Lorrie (Andy), and step-son Wayne (Bettie), nine grandchildren, Racheal, Charles, Landon, Lauren, Amber, Joshua, Jarrett, Brooklyn, Bryce, great-grandson Leland, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by father John, mother Hannah, brothers, Allan, Lorne, Duncan, sisters, Margurite and Maida, and son Lorne. Hector has been cremated and a private memorial service was held at George Brockie Fellowship Centre on August 4, 2016. The family would like to thank everyone who sent flowers and cards, and shared in the celebration of his life.
