WEDGEWOOD: Elsie Verne Wedgewood (nee Mason) Dec. 21, 1923 – Oct. 21, 2016 Our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully at the Minnedosa Personal Care Home on Friday, October 21, 2016 with family by her side. She is survived by her seven children: Murray (Diane), Sandra (Mel), Donna (Paul), Harvey (Shannon), Anita (Dave), Cindy (Bruce), and Robert (Lois), 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Elsie was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Ernest Cecil Wedgewood in August of 1998, and her brothers William, Clifford and Leonard, and sister Annie, in the Portage la Prairie area where she was born. She was the fourth of five children born to William Lester Mason and Sarah Anne Ellen Wright and grew up on a farm in Oakland, north of Portage. After school and a brief time as a nurses aid in Portage, she married Cecil in June of 1942, six months before he was sent overseas for WWII. In 1946 they started farming at Oakland and 12 years later Cecil started working as a grain buyer, moving around southern Manitoba from Boissevain, to Oakville, and Elkhorn, arriving in Kenton in 1972. They built a home in Kenton in 1978 and Elsie kept busy with the UCW at Kenton United Church, singing in the choir, and assisting with music as well as participating in the barbershop group, the Kentones . She was known to donate her pies and buns, cookies and cakes for community activities, and to friends and neighbours as well. She grew a vigorous garden and lovely flowers, and in her leisure time enjoyed sewing, reading and embroidery work. Elsie was happiest when surrounded by family and in July 2006 hosted a reunion in Kenton where all seven adult children and families attended. In 2012 she moved to Lilac Residence at the Hamiota Health Care Centre and lived there until April of this year. On December 21, 2013 family members hosted her 90th birthday celebration in the Kenton Community Hall with many extended family and friends attending. She enjoyed visiting family in Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia, always welcomed visitors, as well as travelled overseas to visit relatives in England. Funeral services will be held at Kenton United Church on Thursday, October 27th, at 2:00p.m., with a luncheon following at Kenton Community Hall. The interment will take place in the Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie, MB on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. The family would like to thank the helpful and caring staff at Minnedosa PCH.Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to Minnedosa Funeral Service, minnfs@mts.netIn lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
