WAYNE: It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Velma Lorraine Wayne (Gowing) on April 14, 2017. Born July 4, 1931 in Winnipeg. She attended school in Minnedosa, then business college in Saskatoon. In Minnedosa she worked as a legal secretary and also at Agristeel. As her career advanced she taught at Minnedosa Collegiate while attaining her Education Degree from the University of Manitoba. She also volunteered to teach in the Caribbean on the island of St. Kitts for a few summers. She retired from her teaching position at the age of 59. Velma married Johnnie Wayne on August 2, 1952 and together had two children, Cheryl and Jeff. Following retirement, Johnnie and Velma spent nine years wintering in Texas and travelling throughout the U.S. including Alaska. They travelled together from coast to coast in Canada, Europe, the British Isles, Portugal, Bermuda, and Mexico, making lifelong friends. After Johnnie died in July 2004 she continued her passion for travel going back to England, then New Zealand, Hawaii, and South America. Music was a big part of her life. She played piano for the Monterey Jammers and the Golden Gals, and volunteered at many nursing homes in Brandon. Family was very important to her. She loved to make cakes, prepare meals, and plan for family celebrations hosting many events. She cherished the grandchildren, great grandchildren and the family dogs. She was readily available to look after the dogs using it as a reason to relax and put her feet up. Nan was a Brandon Wheat King season ticket holder for many years. She will be missed, and the memories will be with us all forever. Velma was predeceased by her parents Leila and Ted Gowing, husband Johnnie, sister Arla as well as brothers and sisters-in-law. Left to mourn are daughter Cheryl (Craig), son Jeff, grandchildren Cara (Dwayne), Steven (Melissa), Jodi (Kent), great grandchildren Madie, Emma, and Nickolas, William, and Norah. Minnedosa Funeral Service in care of arrangements.
