SCOTT/OAKDEN: It is with sadness the family announces that Mabel Harriett Scott/Oakden passed away at Dinsdale Personal Care Home on May 20, 2017 at the age of 96. Mom was born January 25, 1921 in Boissevain, Manitoba to Frederick and Julia Rose Brown. She was the youngest of a family of nine children. Mom graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital as a registered nurse in 1943. She was the only person in her family to receive any formal education beyond high school and was always proud of her nursing career. Mom worked at Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg after graduation and later in Boissevain Hospital. Mom married Charles Oakden on July 21, 1945 and together they had three children; Murray in 1946, Maxine in 1947 and Richard in 1951. Mom and Dad moved back to Boissevain in 1947 where Mum worked as a casual nurse at Boissevain Hospital and Dad partnered in a meat market. In 1961 Mum and Dad took ownership of People’s Food Market and operated as a family business until 1965. In 1966 Mom took the position of Matron of Westview Lodge where she always enjoyed working with the elderly. Throughout the years Mom took great pleasure and interest in her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. Playing bridge and crib were favorite pastimes which she enjoyed into her nineties. Charlie passed away in 1982 and for a period of time Mom lived on her own. In 1992 Mom married Doug Scott and they enjoyed eleven years together. Doug’s children became like her own and there are many memories for all of us. From the time she was a child, Mom’s church and her faith were an important part of her life. We all appreciated Mom’s keen sense of humour, which she had all of her life. She will be greatly missed by all of us. She is survived by Murray and Diane Oakden, Maxine Patton and fiancé Lynn Flewitt, Rick and Sharon Oakden, Keith and Shirley Scott, Clifford and Loretta Scott, six grandchildren and their families and five step-grandchildren and their families. The family wish to thank the excellent staff at Dinsdale Personal Care Home for their care and compassion. A Celebration of Life was held at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church in Boissevain on May 30, 2017 with inurnment in Boissevain Cemetery. Donations in memory of Mabel may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Palliative Care unit in Boissevain Hospital.
