Born April 13, 1928 at Isabella, MB, Doug grew up on the family farm with his four brothers and completed his education at Isabella School. His farming career began in 1946 when he purchased land from his grandfather. He attended the University of Manitoba and received a Diploma in Agriculture in 1948. On October 21, 1950, he married Shirley Schweitzer of Decker, MB and they farmed together for over 50 years. Family was the most important part of Doug's life. A proud and nurturing father and grandfather, he loved having the family together to celebrate special events. Doug was a strong community supporter, volunteering in many capacities. He was a school trustee, chairman of the Isabella Community Committee and served on both the rink and hall boards. He spent countless hours organizing events such as bonspiels, fastball tournaments and reunions. He organized junior curling and coached the Isabella Blues ladies softball team for 10 years. He and Shirley were honoured to have been presented with the Bill Clark Memorial Volunteer Award in recognition of their service to the Isabella community. Doug loved curling, both as a player and a fan. He and Shirley travelled to many places to attend Briers and World Championships. He began collecting curling pins and developed an impressive collection over the years.  He enjoyed this hobby and always said it was a great way to meet people from all over Canada and the World. Doug and Shirley enjoyed camping and fishing with "the gang" at many of Manitoba's lakes. During the winter, Saturday nights were spent with friends playing cards or dominoes and reliving the escapades of those fishing expeditions. Doug suffered a stroke and retired in 1998. He and Shirley continued to live on the farm, helping with family and community activities and tending to their beautiful yard. In 2009, they moved to Park Residence in Hamiota. They enjoyed living there but, sadly, Shirley became ill and passed away in 2014. Unable to care for himself, Doug moved to Birch Lodge. He never lost his sense of humour, his positive attitude or his warm smile and enjoyed the activities there, especially trips to the rink to watch curling. A Graveside Service for family and friends will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. at the Isabella Cemetery followed by a Celebration of Life and Reception at 2:00 p.m. in the Isabella Community Hall, Isabella, MB.
