Lena, beloved wife of Ralph, mother to sons James and Kevin, and grandmother to Harley and Dillon was born on January 21, 1926 in Belmont, MB, to Frederick and Anastasia Dubyts. Lena, along with her 5 sisters and 3 brothers enjoyed life on the family farm. The family spent many happy hours gathering with friends and family where fun, food and music were experienced. Lena attended Mount Hope School and Killarney Collegiate. It was during her time at Killarney Collegiate that she met Ralph at a Box Lunch Social. Lena continued her education in Winnipeg to become a teacher. Lena and Ralph were married in 1950 and moved to Grandview, MB. In 1951, they welcomed their first son James. In 1954, Ralph and Lena moved to Winnipegosis where they remained for 25 years. In 1962, their second son Kevin was born. Lena taught grade 3 at the Winnipegosis Elementary School for several years. Lena loved working with children so it is no surprise that her teaching career extended 26 years. She was an active community member and volunteered as Treasurer of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Legion for 13 years. Lena also served as Secretary for 14 years at the Order of the Royal Purple, which was a great experience for her. In 1979, Ralph and Lena moved to their new home in Brandon, where they resided for 40 years. In November 2016 they moved into the Lions Manor, Brandon. Lena worked part-time at K-Mart for 13 years where she made many life long friends. She volunteered several years for the Canadian Diabetes Association as well as The Canadian Cancer Society in Brandon. Lena volunteered her time by providing bookkeeping and reception duties when her son Kevin started his own business in 1983. Lena led an active life which included golfing, curling, clogging, crafting, reading, knitting, sewing, baking, crocheting, needlepoint, playing cards, socializing, camping, fishing, volunteering, travelling and cooking. She also enjoyed watching curling and baseball on television. Gardening and flowers were a significant part of Lena's life. She took pride in her roses and had a bountiful vegetable garden every year! Ralph and Lena enjoyed vacations, particularly visiting their son in Australia (which they did 11 times). They frequently visited Mesa, AZ, Victoria, BC and enjoyed many casino bus tours. At 91 years of age, Lena went on her first ever helicopter ride, which her son Kevin piloted. Lena will be remembered as caring, energetic, nurturing and a patient grandmother and enjoyed spending countless hours with her two grandchildren. She loved playing games with them, baking cookies, building snowmen, splashing in the kiddie pool and even wrestling on the floor with them. Lena made her grandchildren feel loved and put extra effort into every seasonal event. Lena is lovingly remembered by her husband of 67 years Ralph, son James, son Kevin (Trudy), grandchildren Harley (fiancé Hope), Dillon, her brother Harry (Shirley), sister Olga, sisters-in-law Joan and Lorraine and numerous nieces and nephews.
