GOULD: Fredrick Thomas Gould, MD (HONS). Husband, father, grandfather, physician and gentleman, Fredrick Thomas Gould, 80, passed away surrounded by family on June 16, 2018 at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, CA, of complications from pulmonary fibrosis. Fred was born on the farm in the farming community of Kenton, MB on September 4, 1937 to Stan and Ellen (Hill) Gould. He married the love of his life, Donna Heapy, on June 30, 1958 and in two weeks they would have celebrated their 60th anniversary. As the second child and the eldest son, Fred grew up on the family farm where he learned the value of hard work which stayed with him the rest of his life. He attended Kenton School and Hamiota High School for Grade XII. Forgoing university, Fred joined his father in farming and subsequently acquired a section of land. After Fred and Donna were married, they farmed in the Kenton district. In 1960 they moved to Donnas hometown of Oak River, MB where he purchased a general insurance agency, Oak River Agencies, and sold insurance while continuing to farm. In Oak River he was involved in community life and served on the Board of Stewards of the Oak River United Church, where he chaired the fundraising committee to build the new church. To the amazement of family and friends, in 1966 Fred and Donna moved their family to Winnipeg where Fred attended the University of Manitoba with the aspiration of entering medical school. With much hard work and perseverance, in 1972 he graduated with honours from the University of Manitoba Medical School with the gold medals in Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Prize for Medicine. These were amongst the busiest years of his life, as Fred juggled raising his family with his studies, as well as continuing his farming and insurance operations. In 1973 Fred joined the Silver Heights Medical Clinic in Winnipeg where he practiced for 26 years. He was recognized by his peers and patients as a skilled diagnostician and compassionate caregiver. His family practice was very fulfilling including obstetrics, surgery and nursing home care and he also served as doctor for St. Johns Ravenscourt School for seven years. He treated colleagues, employees and patients with respect and gentility. Fred was an avid golfer and member of the St. Charles Country Club where he served two terms as President. He started the Gould Golfers where he enjoyed not only the golf, but the camaraderie of the group and the weekly matching cards with Fred. He was a member of the Manitoba Club where he served a term as President. With their usual sense of adventure, in 1996 Fred and Donna moved to Tennessee where he again built up a large practice in the Chattanooga area. He attained his certification as a medical director and was the medical director of the Soddy Daisy Health Care and Rehabilitation Center for fourteen years. Upon retirement in 2014, Fred and Donna moved to Palm Desert, CA to the desert he loved. Fred and Donna loved to travel and, along with the family, celebrated significant milestones in Europe and North America. A highlight of their travels was their post retirement Round The World trip. Last fall they spent three weeks in India and had planned a trip with family to celebrate their 60th anniversary when it was thwarted by his medical diagnosis. More than anything as a dedicated family man, Fred loved his soul mate, Donna, and his three children and their spouses, Dickson (Judy) Gould of Winnipeg, Dr. Lisa Gould (Dr. Richard Leicht) of Winnipeg and Jason Gould (Sarah Eyton) of Toronto. Adored for his wit and wisdom, he was the beloved grandfather of William (Ashley) Gould, Richard Gould (Angelina Constantine), David Gould, Stefan Leicht, Anthony Leicht, Bronwyn Gould and Rory Gould, and great-grandchildren, Stanley and Fredrick Gould. He is survived by his brother, Reverend Earl (Joyce) Gould of Winnipeg, brother-in-law Dick (Ivy) Heapy of Oak River, MB, sister-in-law Shirley Codd of Winnipeg, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Doreen Gould, and brother, Dr. Donald Gould. A celebration to honour Freds life will be held at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Avenue, Winnipeg on Tuesday, June 26 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Freds memory to CNIB at www.cnib.ca or Special Olympics Canadaat www.specialolympics.ca
