NICHOL: Flora Eunice (nee McKay) was born August 20, 1931 to Kenneth and Elizabeth McKay at Holmfield, Manitoba. Both parents predeceased her. Her mother passed away in 1966 and her father in 1977. Flora had two brothers Murray whom predeceased her in 1991 and Morley McKay whom currently resides in Brandon, Manitoba with his wife Ruth. Floras family moved to Hilton, Manitoba in October, 1937 where she grew up on a mixed farm located a few miles west of Hilton. Flora received her grade schooling there and in 1951, she moved to Winnipeg and entered the St. Boniface School of Nursing program. In 1954, she received her RN diploma. On May 10, 1954 she began her nursing in the Killarney and District General Hospital and then at Tri-Lake Health Centre, where she continued serving in the health care field for 45 years, retiring in 1998. Flora received her 60 year pin from the St. Boniface School of Nursing in 2014. Volunteering in her community and in her church was enormously important to Flora. She joined the Pelican Lake Chapter #62 Order of the Eastern Star on December 1, 1955 and received her sixty year pin in 2015. She held various offices within the Eastern Star such as Worthy Matron of Killarney and Pelican Lake Chapters, Grand Chapter Officer in 1972 and many other offices throughout the years. In Killarney, Flora joined the UCW in 1957 and over the years she became very involved in the committee work within the church as well. She sat on many a committee and held such roles as President of the UCW and Chair of Church Council; she was also a member of Presbytery and of the Omegas. Floras organizational skills and baking and cooking skills were fully utilized within the church setting. Flora married Robert (Bob) Nichol on July 20, 1957. They just recently celebrated their sixty-first wedding anniversary while Flora was in hospital. They adopted two children: Murray in 1969 and Shauna in 1970. Over the years, the family enjoyed numerous spring vacations to British Columbia to visit long-time friends, The Simpsons, nephew Barry, and Floras cousins. While in the summertimes, Flora and her family would visit Westwinds Campground in Portage La Prairie to camp and see good friends Tony and Yvonne Bouchard and family. Even though Bob and Flora had other vacations to the United States and elsewhere, Flora described these annual family holidays to British Columbia and Portage La Prairie as her favourite places to visit. Floras health problems began in her early eighties when she developed a condition called Giant Cell Arteritis, but she had fortunately had wonderful health up until then. She went into remission with this condition for a few years up until November, 2017. Flora passed away at Brandon Regional Health Center on July 21, 2018. She will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by her beloved husband Bob, son Murray (and Barrie), daughter Shauna (and Brian), grandchildren, Courtney and Brandt, brother Morley (and Ruth), brothers-in-law Mert and Harvey Nichol, numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
