EARL: Eileen May Earl (Wray), May 2nd, 1929-August 1st, 2018. Eileen Earl passed away August 1st, 2018 peacefully surrounded by loved ones after a long, well-lived life. She is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Bill) Crossman and Marj Dickie, five grandchildren Julie (Barry) Card, Kylie (Mark) Chubey, Ambra Dickie (Karel Anctil), Blake Dickie, Dora (Gord) Dickson, and eight much-loved great-grandchildren, Kathrine, Mason, Zoé, Zachary, Nate, Ava, Lucas and Hudson. She is predeceased by her husband, Murray, and son-in-law, Owen. Eileen was born and raised in Minto, Manitoba. As a child she enjoyed card games, ball games, embroidering, sewing and often told stories about her eventful rides to Brownlee School in the horse-drawn sleds. She excelled in school and started teaching at Riverside when she was only 16 years old. In 1948, she took a teaching position in Justice, Manitoba, where she and Murray met. They married in 1949 and soon moved to Brandon, Manitoba, where they started a family. Eileen was a substitute teacher and worked at the Co-op store while bringing up her girls. A shining example for her time, she proved to her daughters and those around her that a woman could work outside the home and still be an amazing mother. She will be remembered by all those who knew her for her delicious angel food cakes and buns. Her grandchildren would always polish off a dish of her home-made dill pickles before one of her great Sunday dinners and her fudgsicles were beyond compare at least they sure seemed that way on a hot summer afternoon. Eileen loved her grandchildren and could always be counted on to lend a hand and was ever prepared with a Kleenex up her sleeve for emergency nose wipes. She was an enthusiastic supporter of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved being included as much as possible in all their sporting activities and important life events. She was affectionately known as “gum grandma” since she carried a packet in her purse without fail. She loved nothing better than sitting at the piano playing by ear with friends and family, singing along at a Saturday night party. Most of her friends will remember her delicious pizza bun snacks, especially after a few drinks. Many a laugh was also had in the cook shack or around the fire at the cabin at Clear Lake. Eileen volunteered with the UCW at Trinity Church for many years, organizing countless meetings, fall suppers and bake sales. She and Murray were avid golfers, who enjoyed their social golf leagues at Glen Lea for many years. They loved attending dances with their friends and were season pass holders cheering on the Wheat Kings each winter. Eileen will be missed and fondly remembered by the many people who knew and loved her. A celebration of Eileen’s life will be held at Trinity United Church, 1515-6th Street, Brandon, Manitoba at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 11th, 2018. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society.
