STEWART: Sam Stewart of Brandon passed away on September 20th at Brandon Regional Health Centre at the age of 90 years. Sam was born in Hamiota in 1928, the second of 3 boys. He started working on the farm in the summer and worked at Red Lake mines in the winter. He married Charlotte Dandridge in 1948 and continued farming in Decker until 1960. He then worked for Pool Elevators until 1971 when he became a land assessor for the provincial government. He retired in Minnedosa in 1991. He was then able to indulge his other interests. Charlotte and he traveled extensively from the Arctic circle to the Galapagos, from Ecuador to New Zealand and many places between including all of the Canadian provinces. He also enjoyed woodworking, fishing and camping but especially music. He played many instruments, the banjo, the tuba in the Decker band, the trombone in the Brandon Community Orchestra, he owned many harmonicas and enjoyed playing the organ and finally serenaded his comrades at Victoria Landing with his accordion. He was a sought after singer for weddings and concerts and spent many happy years with the Strathclair Theatre Chorus and their musicals. Sam was an active member of the IOOF and of the Lions Club, enjoying the serving of others and the camaraderie. He was also very involved with the church wherever he lived. He was predeceased by his son Robert and his older brother Lloyd. Surviving are his wife of 70 years Charlotte, his son David (Bessie), his daughter Carol (Michael) Turabian, and his daughter-in-law Kim Stewart. He leaves 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother Harold (Betty) Stewart. The funeral service was held on September 29th at Westminster United Church in Shoal Lake with Rev Elgin Hall officiating. Minnedosa Funeral Service was in care of arrangements. His family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the palliative care unit for their caring support. Donations in memory of Sam may be sent to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Assoc. or a charity of choice.
