MINSHULL: Edith Bernice of Pierson, MB passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Monday, February 11, 2019 at the age of 93 years. Berne (née Morrow) was born on October 26, 1925. She was the second youngest in a family of ten children. Berne was raised in the town of Melita. As a youngster, she delivered milk by wagon in the community with her siblings. As a teenager, she worked at both the Sun and Carleton Cafes in Melita. In 1944, Berne married Bill Minshull of the Eunola District. Shortly after their wedding Bill was shipped overseas for active duty in World War II. With God’s grace, Bill returned home two years later. The happy couple settled on the Minshull Farm and raised their five children. Berne was a lifelong member of the United Church, a member of the UCW, and Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary. Berne bowled, curled, and loved a good game of cards – particularly cribbage. She accompanied her husband Bill to many baseball games and sports days over the years and followed their children in all their endeavors. Berne had boundless amounts of energy. She was always busy cooking, baking, gardening, and caring for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. All this while still helping neighbours and friends any way she could. Berne would often fill up the car with her own kids and the neighbour kids for the trip into Pierson for Sunday school, and maybe an ice cream cone at the Travellers’ Lunch afterwards. In 2005, Berne was recognized by the Rural Municipality of Edward with a plaque in honour of her contribution to the community. In 2008, at the age of 83, Berne was given an award by the Manitoba Council on Aging recognizing her extraordinary contributions to her community. In 2000, Berne moved from the farm to the Pierson Lodge where she settled in and fast became the life of the lodge. She looked forward to family and friends stopping by for happy hour. Berne was predeceased by her husband, Bill; daughter, Betty-Anne Kirby; parents, Frank and Mary Adelaide Morrow; Bill’s parents, Art and Mary Anne Minshull; eight sisters and one brother; sisters and brothers-in-law. Berne was loved by and will be mourned by many. She is survived by her four remaining children, Barry (Mag), Boyd (Linda), Brad (Brenda), and Barb (Doug); fourteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Joyce Minshull; numerous extended family members. Berne never lost her zest for life and continued to enjoy every minute to her last. The family wishes to thank the Brandon Regional Health Centre ICU doctors and nursing staff, Reverend Heather Sandilands, Redpath Funeral Home, and Pierson UCW for providing the funeral lunch. Thanks to those who sent flowers, cards, and food. Thanks to her close friends Pat Hammell and niece Heather Kennedy for all of their kindness and support to Mum over the years. Thanks also to the Home Care ladies who helped Mum in their special way. Donations in memory of Berne may be made to the Huntington Society of Canada, 151 Fredrick Street, Suite 400, Kitchener, ON, N2H 2M2.
