SHOEMAKER: Vera Margaret Shoemaker passed away at Fairview Personal Care Home on Friday, March 8, 2019 after a lengthy time with dementia and Alzheimers at the age of 92 years. Vera was born on November 7, 1926 to Senkler and Edith Snyder. She was raised in Elkhorn, MB and attended school until grade 11. In May of 1943, she married Lawrence Shoemaker. Together Vera and Lawrence raised five children on the farm in the Spring Vale area south of Elkhorn. In 1960, they moved to Elkhorn and completed their family of seven sons and three daughters. Vera was a very active member in many organizations. She was president of the W.I. and the Legion Ladies in Elkhorn. Vera spent many years working in a nursing home until they moved to Brandon. Once the family had settled in Brandon, Vera once again took a job at a nursing home. She worked at Hillcrest Nursing Home from 1971-1988, when she retired. Vera enjoyed curling, playing ball, knitting in her school years and eventually joined the family curling and bowling teams with the A.N.A.F. Unit 10 of Brandon. Vera liked to keep busy and became the president of the Ladies Auxiliary of A.N.A.F for several years. She was also president of the #247 Legion Ladies. Vera was predeceased by her parents Senkler and Edith Snyder, her husband Lawrence, three sisters Alma Ducharme, Katherine McPhail and Gladys Young, three brothers Lorne, Lyle and infant Senkler, two sons Kenneth and Dennis, daughter-in-law Wendy and grandson Scott. Left to mourn are her children Ron (Verna), Larry (Lois), Rick (Darlene), Doug, Rodney (Brenda), Darlene (Harvey) Bryant, Karen (Tom) Rowson, Denise (Brad) Sanderson, two daughters-in-law Colleen and Marylin, 19 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Veras Life was held at Brockie Donovan Chapel on Thursday, March 14, 2019 with Kim Lewarne as Celebrant.
