KUSHNIR: Marie Kushnir. It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear aunt on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at the age of 93 years in Brandon, Manitoba. Marie was born on January 6, 1926 in the Hamton District of Saskatchewan, the daughter of Peter and Tillie Elchuk (nee Gulak). She was raised on the family farm and attended Feather Hill school. As a young woman she ventured to Toronto with her younger brother, Frank to work in the Singer Sewing Machine factory. Later returning to Yorkton, she worked at Croll’s Department Store where many customers preferred her service as she could speak Ukrainian and help them with their shopping needs. Having worked in retail for so many years, Marie always took pride in being fashionable and stylish until her last days. After marrying Peter Kushnir, they moved to Brandon and she worked at Woolworth’s for 25 years, then Woolco from where she retired in 1991. Marie was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time during the summer in her back yard enjoying the many birds, squirrels and rabbits that she fed. During the winter she enjoyed knitting and crocheting blankets, bedspreads and items that were popular. Spending time with family was very important to her and she continued to travel regularly to Yorkton over the years until her sister’s passing in 2015. In 2017, Marie took residence at the Fairview Personal Care Home where she enjoyed the company of the residents and the staff who lovingly cared for her. Marie was predeceased by her sister, Victoria Sarkany for whom she cared deeply, her husband, Peter, brother and sister-in-law, Metro and Lena Elchuk, brother, Frank, and her parents, Peter and Tillie. Family left to remember her are her nieces, Janey Elchuk and Gail Sarkany, nephew, Barry Elchuk (Mary Cushway), great niece, Selina McAvany (Brian), great-great nephew, Ryley Elchuk and cousin Toni Gromnisky (Gerry). A Graveside Service for family and friends will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Yorkton City Cemetery, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
