BAILEY: Loraine Bailey passed peacefully at sunrise on August 10, 2019. Beloved father, grandfather, uncle and brother, Loraine was first and foremost devoted to Lorna, his wife of 57 years. He leaves behind three daughters and sons-in-law of whom he was very proud; Janice Bailey (Grant Vandenberg), Jackie Bailey (Curt Gobert), and Vanessa Bailey (Kenton Rod). His 5 grandchildren were the great joys of his life; Matthew and Mason Gobert, Liam Vandenberg, and Catriona and Annika Rod. Loraine’s pursuit of education brought him to Canada from the island country of St. Vincent in 1959. He studied soil science at the University of Manitoba and completed his education with a doctorate in soil science from the University of Guelph in 1971. His extraordinary research in the science of agriculture and food production resulted in national and international recognition throughout his unparalleled career and continues to influence food production across the country. Loraine embraced the prairies as he and Lorna built a life in Canada that was filled with cherished friends, family and neighbours, but he always retained the spirit and vibrance of his Carib home. Loraine had a patient, honest way of speaking that made him a wonderfully engaging storyteller, and he was at his happiest when surrounded by family and sharing stories of his childhood on the island. The tales of his pets, Master Willie the pig and Miss Nan the goat, and the folklore of Anansi the spider will be passed through the generations along with the memory of the intelligent, charismatic and courageous man who lived them. Loraine is with his brothers now and his presence will be missed terribly by all who knew him, but his love and guidance will remain forever in all of us. Rest well LoraineA Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12 at Faith Fellowship Baptist Church in Brandon. Memorial donations in memory of Loraine may be made to a charity of choice.
