NICOL: Annie Evelyn Nicol passed peacefully with family by her side December 6, 2019 at the Tri-Lake Health Center in Killarney, Manitoba. She was 100 years old. Evelyn was born March 14, 1919 on the home farm located at 1-4-18 in the Riverside Municipality. She was an extremely active person her entire life. Her father often told people that he had three sons, one daughter and one tom-boy. Evelyn worked at Winnipeg Supply and Fuel for many years. When she interviewed for the job, she was asked if she had experience handling cash. Oh yes! she replied, thinking of her Saturday nights, working at the Rex Café in Killarney. She got the job in the Accounts Receivable department as head cashier, and handled millions over her 25 years there. Evelyn had hoped to become a nurse and go overseas during the war years, but by the time she had the training, they were no longer looking for nurses. However, she was active with St Johns Ambulance Brigade for many years and was involved in the massive evacuation of nursing home patients during the 1950 flooding in Winnipeg. Then came the polio epidemic in 1952. Evelyn volunteered and worked with iron lung patients for the duration. Evelyn married Guy Nicol in October 1970. She retired in Killarney and in later years she was actively involved in square dancing with Guy, the museum and the hospital auxiliary. Evelyn is predeceased by her parents, William J and Florence (Flossie) McKnight, her brothers Alan, Arthur, Howard, and Eldon and her sister Ethel McInnes, her niece Joyce McCausland and her nephew James McKnight. She is survived by nieces Ethelyn, Evelyn, Karen, Bonnie, Valerie and Marilyn, and nephews Murray, Barry, and Ward, and their respective families, and her step-son Glenn and step-daughters Donna and Marg and their respective families. A funeral service was held Friday, December 13, 2019 at the Wheatland Chapel, 582 Park St., Killarney, Manitoba.
