CARLSON: Hilda Alice Carlson (nee Holmstrom) was born December 28th, 1922 at home west of Basswood to parents George and Helma Holmstrom. When she was a baby the family moved to Kenora, Ontario for George’s work and stayed for nearly three years. In 1926 the family moved to the Clear Lake district, now known as Onanole and her parents operated the first general store. Hilda attended school at the Clear Lake School and then the Onanole School where she completed Grade 11. Hilda went on to Winnipeg to school to receive her secretarial certificate and there was a Nanny to a young girl of a family she stayed with. She then was employed at an ammunition plant in Ajax Ontario during World War II and then returned to the Onanole area and worked as a clerk at Mr. Frith’s General Store. She married Walter Carlson on July 10th 1946 at the chapel in Riding Mountain National Park, now known as the Visitor Center. Hilda and Walter resided on a farm south of Onanole. Daughter Mona was born on July 25th, 1949 and son James born on April 28th 1954. The family then moved to Brandon in 1959 where they stayed for 14 years. Hilda and Walter then returned to the farm south of Onanole until Walter’s passing in 2001. Hilda lived independently in a small suite in Onanole and then Erickson until she experienced a fall in the spring of 2019, which required her to move into the Sandy Lake Personal Care Home. Hilda loved travelling in her earlier years, gambling at the VLTs on trips to the casino with her friends and family, watching curling, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune on television, sipping tea, playing cards, knitting, and making lefsa. Above all else, she enjoyed spending time with her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life. Hilda passed peacefully in her sleep December 18th, 2019 at the Sandy Lake Care Home. She is pre-deceased by her parents, husband, all of her siblings and son-in-law Ed. She is survived by daughter Mona, son James (spouse Debbra), grandchildren Kris (spouse Corey,) Jim (spouse Les,) Jennifer (spouse Brad) and Amanda (spouse Ben) and great grandchildren Ryan, Annika and Mason. A family celebration of life will be held in late spring. The family wishes to thank the staff of Minnedosa Hospital and Sandy Lake Personal Care Home for all of their support and care for our “Nanny.” She will be greatly missed.
