RICHMOND: Edith Richmond, May 26, 1929-February 6, 2020. Mom passed away peacefully at the Tiger Hills Health Centre at the wonderful age of 90. She was fortunate to have had good health until recently. She was born in Brandon and raised in Lundar, MB. Her mother was a teacher and her father had the Maple Leaf Creamery. She was very proud of her Interlake upbringing and her Icelandic heritage. She was the oldest of a family of five. Mom went to “normal” school in Winnipeg and then began her lifelong mission as a teacher. She taught in McCreary, Cypress River, Glenboro, Treherne and finally in Baldur. She loved her students and had a marvelous time educating them. She would often brag about their accomplishments big and small and the benefits of going to a country school. The Baldur fowl supper was something she was very proud to have started. She had the students run it from ordering the food to cooking and serving it and cleaning up. She always thought it gave the kids such a good experience and after, they could enjoy the fruits of their labors by taking a day to do what they wished. The importance of a good education was instilled by Grampa Joe who would say “education is not a heavy load to carry, best you have one in case you get a no good husband!” Mom had a great husband but still went on to get her degree in order to continue teaching. To do so she made countless trips to Brandon University in the evening after working all day. Mom met Dad when she came to teach in Cypress. They shared 66 years and were happy to have worked together in various organizations and committees to benefit their family and community. They had great times camping, traveling, hitting the casino’s and going on shopping weekends to the states. The cottage at Twin Lakes Beaches was their “happy place” especially with Auntie Kathleen and in the fall. As with most prairie people, mother enjoyed curling in her younger days. She was quite inventive in the equipment department and would tie feminine products around her knees as knee pads. (under her pants). Her team mates were quite relieved to make it to the end of a game without one falling onto the ice! She was a character. Mom was also a great reader and loved her kobo, she was quite relieved to have finished her latest Cat Mystery story before she passed. She was also an avid Price as Righter. This past fall was rough health wise and she spent a few weeks in the hospital. She fought back and actually came home feeling like a million bucks. We were so fortunate to spend her last Christmas with our wonderful friends Bud, Leanne and Jack. We all have such great memories of that time. Mom is going to be dearly missed by daughter Janice, sister Kathleen Phillips, brother and sister-in-law John and Dorothy Breckman, sister-in-law Doreen Richmond and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves dear friends Bud King, Leanne and Jack Fronius and Karen Davidson. Edith was predeceased by her husband Robbie (2016), daughters Robyn (1964) and Sue (2017), parents Gudmundur Johann "Joe" and Gertrude Breckman, sister Beverley Breckman, brother Bruce Breckman, brothers and sisters-in-law Ron Phillips, Shirley Johnson, Louise (Harold) Simpson, Jean (Walter) Drummond, Marie (Norman) Sholdice, Grace (Roy) Aimes, Rowena (Bjorn) Hallgrimson and Murray (Marg) Richmond. We are deeply grateful for the wonderful staff at the THHC it took awhile for her to whip you into shape (so she said) and she enjoyed every one of you. Dr. Prud’homme, Dr. McTavish and especially Dr. Vorster, bless you. We are sure you will never view a Shakespeare Sonnet in quite the same light! A teacher to the end! Cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service will be held in Spring 2020 at the Glencoe Cemetery, Cypress River, MB.
