TWEED: Willard Robert Tweed. Willard was the last child of William Clarence Tweed and Vona Aldena (Staples) Tweed, born 22 November 1941, in the midst of a Manitoba snow storm. He died on the 29 February 2020 at age 78. Born into a farming family in the midst of the tumultuous war years, Willard grew up with a love of animals and of all things rural. Although never destined to be a farmer, his independence and stubbornness made him blend effortlessly into the Manitoba farming community. He was most comfortable as a small businessman, answering to no one but himself. These ventures were as diverse as baking, paving, managing a laundromat, a billiards parlour and a carpet cleaning business. But the job that he most enjoyed was his 44 year career buying flax straw for Kimberley-Clark (and others) when he came to know every farmer, every side road and every cropped field in southwestern Manitoba. Willard had many interests and talents. His one compelling passion was picking Saskatoon berries, a passion he shared every summer with his brother Arnold. His freshly baked Saskatoon pie was the delicacy of the summer season. Another engrossing interest was antique coins and at various times he owned and traded the rarest of Canadian coins. Spread a pailful of coins on a table and he had an uncanny ability to quickly identify those of interest and reject the dross. He also loved music and was an amateur guitarist and singer of some talent but great reticence. For relaxation he watched sports, and if there was no hockey game he would watch golf. He was even caught, once or twice, watching the fishing channel, though his excuse was that it was good background for an afternoon nap. Willard is greatly missed by his devoted partner of 35 years, Betty Hicks, and his two sons: Shayne (Wendy) and David (Terry Lynne). Other family left to mourn him include three grandchildren (Tyler), Jenna and Braden), great-granddaughter Sawyer and two brothers (Fred and Arnold). His parents and four siblings (George, Edith, Eunice and Alma) have all passed on before him. You are invited to a visitation at the Wheatland Funeral Home in Killarney; the date and time will be announced later. Condolences and cards will be welcome. In lieu of flowers donations to the Manitoba Heart Foundation will be much appreciated.Messages of condolences may be made online at www.wheatlandfs.comWheatland Funeral Service204-523-7791
