Every reserve in Manitoba had some sort of men's hockey team. Indigenous boys grew up in those communities knowing that when they got old enough and good enough they could wear the sweaters of their home reserve. Or if they moved to the city they would be contacted by Olli Cochrane. The teams were their communities' pride and joy. Ollie found dollars so that the Toban's could play in week end Indigenous hockey tournaments. And the Toban's won more than they lost, so Ollie usually got his money back. Mostly we won enough to cover the food and drink and gas to get us home and the team was happy with that. The first game was held late Friday night as soon as the first teams arrived, and games ran all day Saturday. The championship game was early enough Sunday evening to allow everyone time to get home. We came together every weekend with the same anticipation, waiting for the release that happened when our skate blades hit the ice. The rinks we played in were the places where our dreams came to life. So long my friend I will miss seeing you in the dressing room and hearing Ollie giving hell to those who were always late..."dress up boy! dress up!" - Posted by: Blaine Knott (Winnipeg Toban) on: Jul 28, 2021
