BOHUNE: Larry. On Thursday, April 30th, a cherished man stepped across into heaven. Born April 3rd, 1946 in Winnipeg to Joe and Sophie, he soon conveyed to his parents he didn’t want to live in the big city, so they returned to his parent’s home community of Grandview. He and his mother moved to Virden for a time and his beloved grandparents helped to raise him until he returned to Grandview for high school. He worked on the farm and built the incredible strength and amazing work ethic that he brought to everything he did thereafter. At 19, he spread his wings and moved to Brandon with $60 in his pocket. After performing at the top of his class at trade school (ACC), fate brought him to Bruce Kent and he began his lifelong career with Zenith Paving where he spent 47 1/2 years doing what he loved: estimating, surveying and engineering, travelling Westman and forming relationships, working hard and smart. Under current owners the Cumming family, his son Brett became his assistant, at summer jobs thru high school and full time for 15 years (highlight of Larry’s time with Zenith), until Larry retired in December 2014. Larry was an amazing husband to Barbara, a fiercely proud and loving father to Tara (Chris) and Brett, a caring and generous brother to Brenda (Peter) and uncle to Morgan (Mike and baby Madison) and Corey (Nicole). His devotion as a father was unmatched, dedicating his life to his children, especially Brett, his sidekick at work and play. He was a loyal and trusted friend and a passionate dog lover to Nikki, Licorice, Janyne, Roxy and Gina. He loved collecting bicycles, t-shirts, cowboy hats, baseball hats and jackets, part of the unique man he was. His passions included hunting, fishing, camping and in later years, kayaking and cycling, completing 23,092 MILES over a period of 18+ years. He shared that passion with Barb and she shared her passion of dancing and travelling, experiencing many adventures and memories with friends to last a lifetime. December was his last cycling or dancing as a rare cancer (same as Terry Fox) ended his active lifestyle in 2020 and far too quickly took his life. His joy for life and sense of humour attracted many - famous for his creative response when asked, how are you? “Better all over more than anywheres else!” He was passionate about his Ukrainian heritage; a proud and strong man whose down to earth attitude drew people to him; loved by many and greatly missed!
