ELVIRA VOTH
Apr. 1, 1930-Apr. 25, 2019

Elvira Voth, 89, of Steinbach, MB, passed away Thursday, Apr. 25, 2019 at Rest Haven Nursing Home, Steinbach, MB.

Elvira is survived by one sister, Frieda Garvin; sister-in-law, Kay Voth (Rudy); sister-in-law, Betty Voth (Peter); many nieces, nephews and their families.

Elvira was predeceased by her parents, Gerhard and Katharina Voth; one sister, Kathe; one brother-in-law, Roy Garvin (Frieda); four brothers, Abe (Ann), John (Nellie), Peter (Betty) and Rudy (Kay); one niece and one nephew.

Elvira’s parents moved from Russia in 1926, and she was the first child born in Steinbach. The family settled in the Mitchell area, where she grew up on a farm. There they grew their own food and raised some animals. In her earlier years, Elvira was required to memorize 300 Bible verses in order to attend Gimli Bible Camp, where she gave her heart to Jesus. At the age of 15, Elvira finished grade school and worked for a Jewish family in Winnipeg doing housework. She moved with her family to Virgil, ON because her father had rheumatism and would benefit from the milder climate.

After some time, she moved back to Steinbach to finish Grade 12 at Steinbach Bible College and was then accepted for nurses training at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, where she graduated as a Registered Nurse. Her work in Canada took her to work with Indian and Northern Health Services at Island Lake, MB and other parts in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Elvira also worked with MCC, as a nurse, in Bolivia. After years of work and travel, she decided it was time to move back to Steinbach. Elvira nursed at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach until her retirement in the early 1990’s.

Elvira financially supported many worthy missions. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, photography and travel. Her travels included Western and Eastern Europe, Ukraine and Russia. In Russia, she managed to visit the area where her parents grew up. Family was very important to Elvira, so in 1997 she completed and published a memory book for both of her parents. It was important to her that each family member received a copy of each book.

A special thank you from the family to the staff at Rest Haven Nursing Home who lovingly cared for our aunt.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 2 at 11 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with reception following the service. Interment will take place after the reception at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.

If friends so desire, donations in memory of Elvira may be made to a mission of your choice.
