HERBERT (HERB) GILBERT SIMMS

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Herb Simms. Herb leaves to mourn Norma, his loving wife of 38 years, as well as four sons and four step-sons, 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Herb was born in Newfoundland. He was a true fisherman at heart, with many a fish story to share.

Herb was predeceased by his parents Gilbert and Beatrice Simms, two brothers, and one step-daughter.

Herb was a carpenter by trade and throughout his career lived in various places in Canada to find work. He met and married Norma in Calgary in the early 1980s and moved to Ottawa a few years later. They worked there for over 20 years. Known for his boundless energy, Herb spent his leisure time fishing or building things. You might find him in his workshop (which he built) building birdhouses, a new mailbox, or spoon racks for his darling wife for all the spoons they collected on their many travels in Canada and the USA. Herb and Norma loved travelling, saw many places, had many adventures, and met many dear friends.

Herb loved retirement in Sprague where he enjoyed fishing, tinkering in the garage, or playing cards and visiting with friends.

The family wishes to thank the many friends who have sent prayers for Herb and especially those who visited with him, as well as thanks to the Niverville Heritage Personal Care Home for providing a safe environment in his last months.

A celebration of Herb’s life will be held on Friday, Oct. 12, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Sprague Community Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Herb may be made to the Sprague Baptist Church or the Dementia/Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
