LEONARD WALTER KOPYTKO
1940 – 2020
Dad was predeceased by his father William and mother Mary; brothers, Peter and Calvin; and sisters, Olga (Vi) and Alexandra (Marjorie). Left to cherish his memory is his wife Eleanor (nee Thompson); his son Jason (Diane); grandchildren, Sean and Megan and his daughter Janelle (Andy). As well brother-in-laws, Leonard (Phyllis), Mark (Cathy) and Joe and sister-in-law Linda (predeceased by Don.)
Leonard was born on a farm in Alonsa, Manitoba. He attended school in the district, then remained on the farm to help out with the family. On October 12, 1964, Leonard met his wife Eleanor Thompson at a wedding and were married in Amaranth, MB on August 20, 1966. They then started their future together in Winnipeg.
For over 30 years, Dad worked at The Union Stockyards in St. Boniface and then the Winnipeg Livestocks Ltd. in Rosser where he retired.
In his spare time, Dad enjoyed working in his garden, watching sports (he was a huge Toronto Maple Leafs fan) and spending time with his immediate and extended family. Mom and he were able to enjoy travelling to different places every year, their highlights being Nashville and a tour of the Ukraine. But, the most important place he liked to visit was "God's Country" aka Alonsa, MB.
As well, Dad was a member of the Knights of Columbus at his parish, Christ the King. He always headed up any raffle ticket draws and would be seen pretty much at any grocery store location in St. Vital. Dad was a loving, caring person who always loved sitting outside in the summertime, drinking a glass of cold beer with clamato, while listening to the Ukrainian Hour on a Portage La Prairie radio station. He also enjoyed Country music and playing his guitar. Dad had this uncanny ability to connect with people from all walks of life. A stranger quickly became a good friend.
The Kopytko family would like to thank all the nurses, doctors and staff of St. Boniface Hospital for the care and support during Dad's long and difficult recovery.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private family service and burial will be held.

Uncle Leonard you may be gone but your memory will live on. The spirit of my baba lived through you and I felt like when visiting with you, having a beer, watching the maple leafs I also got to see a glimpse of my Baba Marge. I know the last few years were difficult for you and I take comfort in knowing you are up visiting with our family and at ease. You were a kind and joyful man and will be remembered as such. I was a friend & fellow Knight Of Columbus with Len when we lived in Winnipeg. I certainly agree that Len had an uncanny knack of befriending people. He was a natural at it. A humble & warm man. Nothing I can say will help. Please know I am here if you need to talk. Be kind to yourselves, get as much rest as you can and lean on friends and family. Walter and Leonard were cousins and we socialized with many of the same people. Many fond memories. Leonard singing Knoxville Girl is right up there with the best of memories. We loved seeing Leonard at family birthday parties, getting our raffle tickets from him, but more so, simply laughing and teasing him or listening to his responses. My condolences and prayers to Eleanor and family during this difficult time. I remember growing up going to the farm thinking he was my uncle. He always made me laugh & blush. Time went by I grew up than one day as I was working in St. Vital Mall he walked by & said aren't you Steve's girl? HEY Mr K...you will be missed so much... we did have some great times talking about hockey, football and musical events. I'll always be in your debt for introducing me to the music field back in 2013..a lot has happened this then. I will miss you as my partner in the fall for the Tim Horton's Golf tournament as the other member of the "PEROGY BRIGADE"..And our regular coffee breaks....
