CAMRASS: Hugh Phillip Camrass passed away at the Wawanesa Personal Care Home on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at the age of 90. Hugh led a full and interesting life in which he enjoyed his family and friends, his work, and helping others. Shortly after his birth in London, England, his family relocated to Glasgow, Scotland where Hugh remained until graduating from the University of Glasgow School of Medicine. He met student nurse Gena Brown while working at the Shotley Bridge Hospital, in county Durham. Hugh emigrated to Canada in 1957, qualifying as an anaesthetist at the St. Boniface General Hospital; meanwhile, Gena had moved on to Johannesburg, South Africa to continue her nursing career. Despite the miles of separation, the spark between Hugh and Gena never dwindled; they were married in Winnipeg in 1958. Life in Brandon began in 1960 where Hugh's career at the Brandon General Hospital spanned over 30 years. He also enjoyed his role as Medical Officer for the 26th Field Regiment, and a leader with the Boy Scouts. Camping and boating were favourite family holiday activities, and Hugh especially looked forward to his annual week of fishing "up north" with his great friend Dick Parker. Hugh's dream came true in the mid-'80s when he and Gena built their beautiful log home on Noble Lake; they lived there for over 20 years. Hugh loved the graceful Manitoba countryside, and enjoyed long walks around the lake with a dog or two at his side, or driving to all points for the Brandon Humane Society to rescue cats and dogs in need (many of which came home to stay). Hugh enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels in the Wawanesa area, and was always happy to drive someone to an appointment in Winnipeg or Brandon – he always had a book to read or cryptic crosswords to keep him occupied while he waited. Hugh and Gena were so happy living in the Wawanesa community; they made many friends especially Jantje Hopcraft, Dawn Huber, and Lillian and Steve Trowbridge. Hugh leaves three children: Phillip, Ruth (Ken Ellis), and Paul (Catherine) and two grandchildren. The family would like to thank Vicki Wenger, Dr. Lee, Earl Vidler, and the wonderful staff at the Wawanesa Personal Care Home. At Hugh's request, there will be no funeral service, however, he would welcome his family and friends to raise a glass in his memory. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hugh's memory can be made to the Wawanesa Community Foundation, Box 209, Wawanesa, MB R0K 2G0 or to a charity of choice.
