JAMES SCOTT CORNWALL
February 27, 1942 - December 2, 2020
Jim leaves behind his wife Diane; daughter Kelly (Jerry); son Darrell (Jodie); and much-loved grandchildren, Cody, Mackenzie, Brandon and Karley. He also leaves behind his beloved sisters, Chris Bronstein (Dr. Mark Bronstein) and Patricia Cornwall; nieces, Sarah and Laura; and always supportive mother-in-law Audrey Welsh; along with his beloved dogs, CoCoa who was always by his side and Keiko standing guard.
He also leaves behind friends and colleagues, too many to mention both at home in Canada, and at his second home in Mesa, where Jim loved to spend his winters. Along with many colleagues from his 50 years in the automotive industry and the many acquaintances he shared the hobbies he loved with. Whether that was golfing at Elmhurst or the numerous car clubs and car shows he attended.
A special thanks goes to all his friends who were so much help in his last years while he battled cancer: Ron and Sharon Trafzer in Mesa who were of immeasurable help and support, his faithful crew of dear friends Ted Paterson and his wife Karen who welcomed his family to Winnipeg, Tom Gill and Joan, Marshall (Hockey), Dick (The Fisherman), Dennis Harrison, Wayne and Cheryl Rivers, Harold and Lucy Cherwinski, Al and Liz Quoziente, Jim and Carol McNiell, Bob Sterner, Mort McKechnie, Adam Olinyk and many others.
He also leaves behind a long list of people from the automotive industry who made significant contributions to his life. A special thanks goes to Gary Gease and Anthony Maros of Bank of Montreal, David Devere of Booke and Partners, Garth Reimer, Mark Chipman, the Gauthier family, Jason Cross, John Carter, Tony Wearing, Karl Schlicht, Kevin Olfert, Ray Turney, Chuck Bailey, Pat Mooney, Jason Boyd, Jack Muise, Karin and Henry Weise, Grant Cobb and Rob Smith. We also thank all of his colleagues at Toyota Canada and his fellow Toyota Dealers, Mazda Canada, Chrysler Canada, American Motors, along with the many associates on the boards he represented, and of course all of his staff and customers both past and present at McPhillips Toyota.
As a young man Jim followed his father Clarke Cornwall, an Executive with Ford Motor Company, Oakville Ontario into the car business. Jim began his career with American Motors as Distribution Manager until the opportunity came to run an American Motors factory store in Burnaby, BC. From there his love for the car business flourished where Jim went on to manage Lakeview Plymouth Chrysler in New Westminster, BC and then Pacific Dodge in Surrey, BC. Jim then began a partnership with fellow Winnipeg dealer Jim Gauthier which began with managing a local Mazda dealership then followed with the acquisition of Carter Toyota. After many years of hard work and dedication he became the sole owner of McPhillips Toyota.
Jim had incredible wit and a way with words along with an uncanny ability to say things at just the right moment. His charm and loyalty will be deeply missed by the many who knew him and soon called him a friend. You always knew where you stood with Jim there was no holding back how he truly felt or what his thoughts were, good or bad, which the many who knew him deeply respected. We will miss his deep thinking, insight and honesty and his passion for all he held dear.
We would like to thank Dr. Woods in Medicine 2, along with the nurses and caregivers at Selkirk Regional Health Centre. We also thank CancerCare at Selkirk Regional Hospital especially Ashley, Dr. Alexander and Dr. Brown for their compassion.
As per Jim's wishes there will be no service due to Covid restrictions.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Jim's memory to the Interlake Eastern Health Foundation (Attention: Pamela McCallum, CancerCare Selkirk in memory of Jim Cornwall), P.O. Box 5000, 120 Easton Drive, Selkirk, Manitoba R1A 2M2 or visit https://www.iehf.ca to donate online.

I did not know Jim really well.I met him often at car shows and in the neighborhood. We live only a few streets apart. Jim would always greet me with a smile and we would discuss our appreciation for old cars. He really liked one of mine. A 1937 Chevy 2door coupe. And I liked his collection as well. I will miss seeing him. Rest in peace my friend. Blake Piper, Car Nut and friend. - Posted by: Blake Piper (Acquaintance through the Collector Car Hobby and East St. Paul resident. ) on: Dec 24, 2020

I will truly miss my friend. My condolences to the Cornwall family. I would like to share a story. Jim and I would play golf a couple times a year. It was one of my favourite rounds of the year, as I spent most of the time laughing. The last time we played, for whatever reason, Jim had asked that he borrow a putter. So I brought an extra one for that round. To my disbelief, he was making putts from everywhere with this borrowed club. He beat me with an 81 that day! I offered him the putter, but he told me that it brought him more joy that I hold on to it, as a way of remembering how bad he beat me. That was the last time we played. Well, Jim, I will never get rid of that putter. Thank you for the memories! - Posted by: Anthony Maros (Friend ) on: Dec 10, 2020

I met Jim while working on one of his many collector cars at Terry Treichel’s shop. Jim came in the shop and shortly after our conversation I heard his humour. Right away I liked this man having not met him before this. He will be truly missed and I would like to send my sincere condolences to the family. - Posted by: Ron Baxter (Friend) on: Dec 09, 2020
