KENNETH (KENNY) GEORGE MARKUSA
October 12, 1955 - December 26, 2020

With great sadness I announce that suddenly, but peacefully, Kenny passed away at home on December 26, 2020.
He is survived by his twin sister Carol, aunties, Olga and Edna, Uncle Ed (Gail), many cousins and second cousins, numerous friends and former co-workers.
Kenny (and his twin sister) came into this world as a surprise to everyone involved, including the smarty pants doctor who put our Mom on a diet not realizing she was expecting twins. Both having been breech birth, Kenny kicked out his sister, and he liked to say that was the first and last time he had the upper hand in the twin relationship. Not that he minded. Imagine not getting angry after your bossy sister sends you on a bicycle to buy her cigarettes and you end up in the hospital after being hit by a car. Luckily his injuries were not severe.
Kenny grew up in the Wolseley area attending Laura Secord elementary school and graduating from Gordon Bell high school. He didn't stray far, spending his entire life in the Wolseley area.
He started his full-time working career at Eaton's mail order and was saddened when the mail order closed down in 1976. He then had a brief stint at MPI as an adjuster before moving on to Westfair Foods where he worked as a shipper receiver until his retirement in 2015.
Kenny had many interests and hobbies, including cars (he once owned three at one time including his beloved Corvette), car racing, model building (collecting many awards throughout the years), military history, travelling, photography, cigars and whiskey. He was a valuable member of IPMS (International Plastic Modelling Society) model club of Winnipeg. He was also the Manager at Tiger Hobbies where he was surrounded by two of his passions, modelling and military history, and enjoyed meeting up with his modelling buddies on Saturday. His favourite form of travel were road trips, making many trips across North America to car races and modelling conventions. In his later years he discovered the joys of European travel when he went on a military history tour of France, Belgium, England and the Netherlands with six friends, which culminated in attending the largest modelling convention at that time in England. He loved it so much that he returned a few years later, but mainly for the food and beverages.
In his younger years Kenny dabbled in mixed curling, which he hated and mixed softball which he quite enjoyed. He was also the guy you wanted on your trivia team, he seemed to know something about everything. He used to say he was a fountain of useless information. Once they opened up to Canadian contestants, he hoped to one day compete on Jeopardy! Kenny was also a pretty handy guy whether it was a repair, installation or building something. He was proud of the garage he built and renovations he did when he bought his house. Last but not least Kenny was someone you could rely on no matter the circumstances.
Sadly, he was recently diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and I would like to thank the many doctors and other health workers that cared for him during his brief time with this devastating disease. As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to ALS Society or the MS Society.
Kenny, you were the best brother a sister could have and you will be deeply missed by everyone who knew you.
Due to Covid restrictions, no service will be held at this time.

  • Ken was a great guy. Back in days when I worked at Westfair (30ish years ago) we could always rely on Ken for a good laugh. I almost bought that Corvette of his at one point but when he suddenly came into some money, he got it painted and was no way going to sell it after that. Sorry to hear that he's gone. My sincere condolences to the family. - Posted by: Mark Jenken (Co-Worker long ago at Westfair) on: Jan 11, 2021

  • My condolences to you and your family, Carol. I remember your living across the street from us on Home Street. I believe you and Ken were in a few of my Laura Secord classes, as we often had 2 grades per classroom. Ken was a great guy; I’m so sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Mark Strople (Friend) on: Jan 09, 2021

  • To Ken’s family. I met Ken at an IPMS Winnipeg meeting after getting back into building models after a 25 year hiatus. While raising my family I found myself getting to know and make friends with quite a few members at the club. While I have made many friends in the club, there were a close 5 that made up our TGIF “ gang”. We would get together at our friend Tom’s for cigars food and drink. It became a ritual every Friday where possible. The topics varied from our hobby to politics to everyday topics. Ken never said much, but when he did, he made sure he was heard. Our trip to Europe with the TGIF club were a definite highlight for me. It was a chance hang and enjoy each other’s company, and enjoying the living history of the battlefields of WW1 and WW2. I counted Ken as a friend and he will be sadly missed for his insight and unique sense of humour. Rest In Peace Ken! - Posted by: Rob Schaepe (Friend) on: Jan 09, 2021
