SIGMUND PETER SOBCZAK
April 29, 1947 March 11, 2021
After years of battling cancer, with no other treatment options available, he, like our mom, chose MAID (Medical Assistance in
Dying), in order to have a peaceful and
dignified passing. He wanted to wear his "travelling shirt", which was a nice button up. We tucked an Ace Auto Electric screwdriver into his front pocket and when asked if he is ready, he said, "Let's get outta here." He
passed in his home, lovingly surrounded by his family, while holding his son's hands. We laughed, we cried. He told us, "Love you all". He was ready to go; he definitely felt all the love from everyone and he truly looked at peace.
Sig was born in Germany to Frank and Monika. He was preceded by his older
brother Joe and survived by his brothers, John, Chester, Henry and Stan and his
beloved sister Terry. He fell in love with Cheryl as a young man and they were happily married for 49 years. They raised three kids, Dave, Angie and Sterling, ran a business and built an incredible life together. Sig was a loving and supportive father, always willing and able to guide and assist his kids in their numerous events and activities.
Sig's love for all things mechanical started at a young age, and he quickly became a
master mechanic, he literally could fix
anything. Along with his passion for cars came his passion for racing. He raced
modifieds and sprint cars. A love that he shared with many friends and family, both as a driver and supporter of Dave's pit crew. He enjoyed the excitement of racing and the
camaraderie of friends and a well-earned beer or four late into the night in the pits. He has always appreciated classic cars and the people and stories that came along with them. He especially enjoyed his retirement gig at Buddy's garage. He took great pride in helping to solve car issues when no one else could and he particularly enjoyed the wings and beers with his buddies.
Sig was an incredibly hard working man who spent countless hours building a
successful business. He worked for over 50 years at Ace Auto Electric. Sig understood the importance of getting his customers in and out of the shop quickly and back on the road. In turn, he had many loyal and repeat customers. Sig also had many long term
employees many for 20 plus years and a
couple that worked for him for 40 plus years, a testament to his leadership abilities.
Each Saturday, he generously shared the shop with friends and family. Cars were
washed, repairs were made, oil was changed, customers were served, batteries were charged, dirt bikes and sprint cars were
readied for racing and then, when it was time, they all went for lunch. The Saturday
tradition of working on cars and going out for lunch continues to this day!
Not only did he share his shop, he shared his home, his pool and cabana area and hosted many, many large celebrations. He was
generous beyond measure and he made
everyone feel included and welcomed. He
often would fall asleep even when a party was going on around him. Though, we knew he was always listening because he would often shout out the correct answer to a trivial
pursuit question while in the middle of a nap!
Sig enjoyed travelling and took his family on many hot holidays where so many wonderful memories were made together. He also loved his motorcycle rides down to Sturgis he rode his BMW and his Motto Guzzi both several times. He had many toys and they were always different and unique, often
conversation starters. His latest project being the Coach. Sig adjusted, rebuilt, improved, redid and reworked literally every system on the coach, but he truly enjoyed travelling down the road with Amma at his side or five energetic grandchildren, on an excellent
adventure!
Sig was one of the most amazing, kind,
generous and courageous people in the world. He will be deeply missed by his oldest son Dave Sobczak (Camille) and their children, Zarah; Marek, his daughter Angie Baseraba (Cory) and their children, Zander, Evan and Hayden; his youngest son Sterling Sobczak (Shana) and their children, Eddie, Gabriel and Charlotte. He also leaves behind extended
family as well as many, many treasured friends.
Here's hoping Amma was waiting for him, drink in hand . . . ready to begin their next
adventure together. xoxo
A celebration of Sig's life will take place at a later date.

We knew him as Ziggy in the 50's, I lived on Manitoba Avenue and Ziggy and Joe on Magnus. Ziggy was a couple years older than me, but he helped get me a job as a newspaper carrier for the Free Press. We all shared the same passion with cars, Mario Grande too. I remember him as a straight shooter, you knew where he was coming from and someone who at that time was beyond his years. He was someone who I as a young teenager was fortunate to have him as a mentor and role model. He will be missed by all of us in that era and area of the North End. May you rest in peace - you deserve it. Clarence Drebit 679 Manitoba Ave - 1950's - Posted by: Clarence Drebit (Former neighbour) on: Apr 05, 2021

I have known Sig since the mid 1970s when I was a kid and always had huge respect for a nice man. I would enjoy watching him engage with my father, Tom Lester, at Ace Auto ... always fun ... I knew him in my youth, and maintained a friendship and smile when we would greet. It was nice to know when he moved to East St. Paul and his family were all great. Acquainting with him at hockey games for his grandson and my nephew brought more smiles. He is with wife Cheryl now and will be missed. RIP and God Bless. (warm thoughts from the Tom Lester family). - Posted by: Dan Lester (Friend) on: Mar 21, 2021

Sig’s Family, We are saddened to hear of Sig’s passing. He was just a “great guy”. Memories go far back to when Sig & Cheryl were an active family in the East St. Paul Community Club. Sig played for the “Heart Attackers”, a group of men who enjoyed playing hockey against other teams their own age. Those were fun times. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family & a special “hug” to Terry, Sig’s sister, who cared so much for her brother. May both Cheryl & Sig Rest In Peace together. Our thoughts & prayers are with you. Fred & Jan Butler - Posted by: Fred & JanButler (Friends) on: Mar 20, 2021

Siggy was a great friend who was always happy & upbeat whenever we saw him & we will forever remember him for making our days together pleasant. Especially enjoyed motorcycle rides to Sturgis with him & the crew. He was a gearhead in every sense of the word when it came to mechanics & he will now be able to continue on with our good friend Harry in heaven! Until we meet again...RIP Sig - Posted by: Wayne & Jackie Chambers (friends) on: Mar 20, 2021

First met Siggy in the mid 70’s when I had bought my first semi trailer truck. I can’t count how many times he helped me out of a jam at the most inconvenient times. Such a good man, fair, hard working and just plain likeable. I’m sorry I did not stop to see him at “Ace” all the times I was driving by. Always thought of it but never seemed to have time. So sorry to see him go. - Posted by: Real Freynet (Long time customer) on: Mar 20, 2021
