STEWART: Robert "Gary" Stewart was born November 5, 1950 to Harvey and Chris (McLellan) Stewart. He grew up on the Stewart farm in the Oak River District. As a child he liked snow-shoing and biking and shooting gophers. As a teen he liked girls, snowmobiling and driving too fast. He enjoyed the rural social life with Boy Scouts, Sunday School, and curling. Finishing high school in 1969 he had a diverse series of occupations driving concrete or gravel trucks, working in an open pit mine in Ontario, and preparing tax returns. He worked as an attendant at the Brandon Mental Hospital too. When his father died in 1972 Gary went farming full-time with the help of his young brother Cam and his uncle Bill Stewart. He became a pedigreed seed grower and enjoyed cleaning seed for neighbors. In mid life he was persuaded to run as trustee for Rolling River School Division. Following that he was a councillor for the RM of Blanshard until his retirement to Hamiota. The thing you will remember about Gary Stewart is that he loved people. He enjoyed his old friends and relished meeting new people too. He was a warm and caring person who brought joy to others with his hearty laugh and easy manner. He leaves to mourn his wife Ruth (nee Hornibrook) and his children Julia Stewart Orchard, Charles, and Douglas Stewart and their spouses Greg, Melody and Sarah, and his grandchildren Alexandra and Abbigail Orchard, Nathan, Bridget and Brooklyn Stewart and Angus Stewart. He is also survived by his brother Cameron and his wife Vivian, and his sister Janice and her husband Dick Longstaff and their families. Gary died June 26 of esophageal cancer. He had a brief stay in Hamiota hospital where he was grateful for very compassionate care. A family graveside service will be held at a later date at White Bank Lea Cemetery, Oak River, MB.

  • Ruthie, I just found Gary's obituary on the Internet by chance. We are glad to have met Gary on our trips to Manitoba, I hope that you are coping and I am thinking of you, Love, Jan - Posted by: Jan Hade (Cousin to Ruth, his wife) on: Jan 09, 2022

  • We are so sorry to hear of Gary's passing. What a shock. Thought he was the kind of guy who would live forever - well he will in our memories. He was 3 years older than me so I didn't know much about his teen years but my husband remembers him well. Think the fast cars and liking girls had something to do with those memories as we have not been back much to Oak River in the past 50 years. Our sincerest condolences to all the family. • Very sorry to hear of Gary's passing. He was a great classmate and friend. Although I do not visit the Oak River district anymore, I have fond memories of growing up there and going to school with Gary. Curling was indeed one of Gary's favorite pastimes and I recall going to a few local high school bonspiels in Gary's car (a 1957-58 Pontiac if my memory serves me correctly). We did have a good time! - Posted by: Tom Sclater (School Classmate) on: Jul 06, 2021
