FRANKLIN: "Joe" Donald William. Joe passed away peacefully with Linda by his side on Wednesday, September 22, 2021. Joe was born in Brandon on December 5, 1957 to parents Alvin and Marie and was raised on the family farm Hwy #270 North Brandon with his older siblings Doug and Darlene. As a young child, he often tagged along with his dad and grandpa around the farm, his main interest was the machinery - learning how they ran and how to fix them if they stopped running. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of ten, Joe faced his illness and restrictions with a positive attitude. Joe attended Forrest and Elton schools where he met many lifelong friends. Together with childhood friend Darcy, they spent countless hours riding bicycles, dirt bikes and skidoos. Joe always had time for long conversations with neighbors and friends catching up on their life adventures and sharing his. As a teenager, Joe enjoyed taking coffee trips to Hedy's café in Rivers where he met friends Fred and Joan Allen. Joe and Fred enjoyed many crazy adventures that included fishing trips, cars, SUV's and motorcycles. Joe thought of himself as "Uncle" to Fred and Joan's daughters Janice and Jamie, he was always interested in hearing of their life achievements. Joe worked at Edson Manufacturing before attending ACC and completing his Auto Mechanics. He then worked at Forman Motors in Rivers as a mechanic - a career he truly loved. Joe upgraded his skills to include RV mechanics and worked at various RV shops in Brandon. Being a mechanically inclined man, Joe owned a few pride and joy vehicles, but his biggest "heart throb" was his 2008 purple and black Heritage soft tail Harley Davidson. In 2009, Joe and Linda met and their friendship grew into a loving relationship, enjoying each other's family and friends. Joe enjoyed family gatherings with Linda's children Jason and Shealynn (Brooks) Woods. In 2014 and 2016 Joe became a very proud "Poppa Joe" to Shealynn and Brooks' sons Johnathan and Michael. Poppa Joe loved spending time with his little guys. Joe and Linda enjoyed many adventures and long rides on the Harley touring rural towns and country sides. Joe's other interests were woodworking making various pieces of furniture including pieces of children's furniture to give to his friend's children. Joe was an exceptional baker; many home baked treats were enjoyed by Linda and her co-workers. In 2016, Joe's health started to decline, sadly in 2020 Joe's diabetes started to win the fight which led to his admittance to A3 mod 2. The care and compassion shown to Joe and Linda during his stay and passing will never be forgotten. Joe was predeceased by parents Alvin and Marie and by his sister and guardian angel Darlene. Joe is survived by brother Doug, partner Linda and her children Jason and Shealynn Woods (Brooks) and his favorite boys Johnathan and Michael, many cousins and friends. A private graveside service was officiated by Rev. Barb Jardine on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Joe's urn was carried to his final resting place alongside with his dad at St. Georges Cemetery by his friend of many years Fred Allen. Donations in memory of Joe may be made to the Diabetes Canada, #401 – 1 Wesley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4C6.
